  • Slow down, especially in residential areas and in 20 MPH school zones.
  • Yield to pedestrians at crosswalks and intersections.
  • Stop whenever a school crossing guard is in the crosswalk.
  • Watch for pedestrians when making turns and crossing sidewalks.
  • Wait until the children and crossing guard have returned to the curb before entering the intersection.
  • Students should walk on the left side of the road facing traffic when meeting a school bus.

  • Students should be courteous and respectful as they wait for the school bus.

  • Remain seated while the bus is in motion.
  • Keep hands, arms, and all objects inside the windows.
  • Keep conversation at normal tones; avoid loud noise.
  • Do not carry objects on the bus that may be hazardous, such as skateboards, skis, glass objects, live animals, etc.
  • Follow the bus driver's instructions regarding where to cross the street.
  • When possible, walk or drive with your student to school.
  • Use the safe walking route provided by your school.
  • If there are sidewalks, use them.

  • Make sure the driver sees you before crossing in front of a vehicle.

Note: In Utah, 160,000 students ride school buses more than 28 million miles to and from school each year. Nationally, 25 million children ride the school bus each day. The National Research Council statistics show school buses to be one of the safest forms of transportation. For every 100,000 passenger miles, school buses incur 0.01 deaths compared to 0.04 for passenger trains, 0.06 for scheduled airlines and 0.94 for passenger cars.
