Sheltered Instruction Observation Protocol

(S.I.O.P)

SHELTERED ENGLISH INSTRUCTION:

Based on the District’s Service Plan for English Language Learners, teachers need to differentiate through Sheltered English Instruction for English acquisition and content accessibility.  According to research findings by the Center for Applied Linguistics (CAL), Center for Research on Education Diversity and Excellence (CREDE) and supported by the U.S. Department of Education, Sheltered English Instruction can make a difference with the academic achievement of English Language Learners.

SHELTERED INSTRUCTION OBSERVATION PROTOCOL – S.I.O.P.:

Since 2001, Granite School District has been offering SIOP training for its teachers and administrators.  The 2-day training focuses on effective strategies which will enable all students to increase their academic learning.

S.I.O.P. COACHING:

As a follow-up of the 2-day training, SIOP coaching is being provided to schools which have received the training and would like to implement the model in its entirety.  The strength of the training is the actual application of the knowledge gained from the training.

GOAL:

To provide educators with strategies and knowledge to help English Language Learners increase their academic achievement in content subjects as well as with English proficiency. The focus is to close the academic gap.

THE 8 COMPONENTS:

  • Preparation
  • Building Background
  • Comprehensible Input
  • Strategies
  • Interaction
  • Practice/Application
  • Lesson Delivery
  • Review/Assessment
