Granite police officers arrest abduction suspect

A 36-year-old man is in the Salt Lake County jail today facing charges of attempted kidnapping of a 17-year-old high school student. Granite School District police officers found and arrested the suspect within 30 minutes after the student reported the incident.

At approximately 3:45 p.m. Wednesday, the female student was sitting on the lawn of Granger High School near 3600 West. A man approached her with repeated requests that she get inside his truck and come with him. Eventually the suspect pulled the girl’s arm, she reported, in an attempt to get her into the vehicle. She resisted, and the man left.

The student entered the school and found an adult associated with the Granite Peaks community education program and reported the incident. The adult notified Granite School District police.

Granite School District police officers, assisted by West Valley City police, responded and began a search of the area. A Granite School District officer soon spotted the suspect’s distinctive dark-blue pickup truck parked at a nearby fast food restaurant. After the victim positively identified the vehicle and the suspect, Ignacio Gonzalez, date of birth February 1, 1970, he was booked in the Salt Lake County jail pending charges of attempted kidnapping and criminal trespass.
