Students pay fees and pick up schedules. School motto "Empowering students for success in tomorrow's global society" Extracurricular programs Wasatch offers a variety of extracurricular opportunities: competitive sports, intramurals, Geography Bee, Math Counts, MESA, PTSA Reflections, Science Fair, Cultural Fair, Junior Achievement, and Community of Caring. School background Wasatch Junior High opened in 1959. In 1962, enrollment reached a peak of 1,559 students. In July, 2005, the building was destroyed by a devastating fire. From 2005 – 2008, Wasatch students attended school with neighboring Churchill Junior High. Three years later, in August, 2008, the new Wasatch opened its doors to 820 students. Wasatch students continue to perform exceeding well on national (Iowa Basic) and criterion-referenced tests (CRT). Wasatch scores on these tests are among the highest in the state. Enrollment Currently, Wasatch has an enrollment of 820. Due to its reputation for academic excellence, Wasatch attracts not only students within its boundaries but a large percentage of students from surrounding school districts. During the open enrollment period (December 1 through the third Friday in February), students may apply for admission. Computers and technology All classrooms have digital projectors that are connected to computers, DVD players, and voice enhancement systems to help facilitate effective instruction. Two computer labs are available for teachers use. The school-wide emphasis is teaching across the curriculum. Additionally, parents are able to access student grades, teacher web pages, and email addresses through the internet. Student promotion Students promoted predominantly attend Skyline High School. Students celebrate their successful junior high experience at the end of their ninth grade year. The promotion, sponsored by the Wasatch Junior High PTSA, has consisted of a catered dinner and dance.
