School counselors are assigned to every secondary school in Granite School District. They meet individually with every student in their caseload to help them succeed in school. They also meet with students in small groups, in classrooms, in large group meetings, grade-level or school-wide assemblies, etc. School counselors are information resource specialists. They have a vast amount of information to share with students and their parents about all of the OPTIONS and OPPORTUNITIES available through Granite School District. Students need to get to know their school counselors -- they are in our school to help students be successful.
Comprehensive Counseling and Guidance Program Overview:
In 1988, the Utah State Office of Education launched an ambitious initiative to restructure the state's secondary school counseling and guidance program services based on a program model developed by Dr. Norm Gysbers at the University of Missouri, Columbia. Utah schools are now in the eighteenth year of implementation of the Utah Model for Comprehensive Counseling and Guidance.
The
Granite School District Board of Education adopted the Utah Model in 1992. All twenty-six of Granite District's secondary schools are implementing the Utah Model and have met stringent program standards for "program approval" from the Utah State Office of Education. Granite District's comprehensive counseling and guidance program is designed to serve 100% of the students in each secondary school through responsive services, individual planning, and guidance curriculum.
Comprehensive Counseling and Guidance Program Imperatives:
- Starts the first day of school and ends the last day of school
- Serves 100% of students in the school

- Education based, not agency based
