MESA OBJECTIVES

The overall objective is to sponsor MESA Academic Activity Clubs that act as magnets for target students who are successful, need mentoring to achieve success and agree to meet MESA standards of GPA (2.5 and above) in club participation, course taking patterns, participation in service learning and tutoring as needed to maintain academic success in math and science. These following objectives will be used to monitor program effectiveness:

  • To increase the number of underrepresented minorities and females who pursue course work in mathematics, engineering and science that are eligible to participate in the MESA program.
  • To maintain a target ratio of 65% minority to 35% Anglo female in the District MESA Academic Activity Club total.
  • To have 95% of the MESA seniors enroll in post secondary institutions or the military (in 2002 and 2003 100% of MESA seniors indicated that they were enrolling in post secondary institutions and graduated high school).
  • To insure that all MESA Activity clubs have a minimum 3 parent meetings, 2 field trips (with speakers) and/or 3 speakers (role models for ethnic students) per year. The MESA Activity Club officer's duties will include, planning club meetings and activities, contacting past members for reunion activities, keeping a scrapbook of club activities and having a page in the school year/memory book.
  • 80% of all MESA students will be surveyed on an attitudinal survey to determine baseline data on self-image and math/science interest.
  • To maintain the 11 junior high schools offering MESA Math Classes in seventh grade. Currently, Bennion, Bonneville, Brockbank, Eisenhower, Evergreen, Granite Park, Kennedy, Matheson, Valley and West Lake have MESA Math classes.

MESA will also encourage students to participate in a variety of clubs and extra curricular activities to increase the number of target students in those activities. This participation will not count towards incentives but will count as MESA participation credit. This encouragement is an outcome of the above objectives and will be reported.
