Elementary Magnet Program
Granite’s elementary magnet program is expressly designed for students who need a curriculum beyond what can reasonably be provided in their local school gifted program. Students in this program comprise approximately the top academic 1% of the elementary students in the district. The current program serves students in grades one through six at two different sites:
Morningside Elementary (4170 South 3000 East) and
Fox Hills Elementary (3775 West 6020 South).
Students who score in the top 10% of their school population on the gifted assessments (out-of-level Stanford Achievement Test, Naglieri Nonverbal Test, Teacher Assessment and Parent Report) are invited to participate in further testing as potential candidates for the magnet program. The Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT), which assesses performance in verbal ability, quantitative ability, and nonverbal ability is administered to eligible students by Granite School District personnel. This testing is scheduled on two different Saturdays during the months of March and/or early April with results sent to parents by the end of April. The results of the CogAT and the tests administered at each school are considered by a district team to determine if the student should be invited to attend a magnet program. At that time an open house is scheduled at each program site so that parents and children who are considering accepting an invitation to the magnet program have an opportunity to visit the classrooms. Classroom visits by interested parents and children at other times are disruptive to the program.
