Program Description: Our program is designed to respond to habitual truancy at both the elementary and secondary school levels. This approach consists of collaboration amongst school, court and law enforcement officials in which each agency contributes key actions that respond to truancy. Our process involves graduated measures beginning with least restrictive responses to chronic truancy that can ultimately culminate in court proceedings. Student and parental behavior is addressed through approaches that seek to create greater awareness to the importance of education while instilling accountability. Program staff include: coordinators, secretaries and attendance specialists. Program/Service Benefits: The truancy program assists administration in servicing their need for response to the chronically truant population. Moreover, it provides the necessary support / resources to students, the community and various allied agencies.

Students/Grades Served: Grades: 1st – 10th. The truancy program is not equipped to deal with students who have extremely impaired intellectual or behavioral issues. In these situations, a court of law would not typically hear the case due to truancy being viewed as a secondary issue to other matters. Special cases or situations should always be reviewed with a truancy program coordinator prior to referral. Enrollment/Referral Process: Attendance specialists or representatives at a school will identify truant students and utilize reasonable efforts to encourage better attendance. Efforts frequently include face-to-face contact, parental contact or behavioral contacts. Should reasonable efforts fail, letters are initiated and a district meeting with a student and his/her parents is scheduled. If chronic truancy continues, the student and / or parent are referred to Juvenile Court.
