The following documentation is needed to complete this process: immunization records, 8½ x 11 birth certificate, proof or residency, and transfer out papers from previous school. It was built in 1979 to serve the growing population of the Bennion area. Calvin Smith is mainly a walking school, but busing is provided for students living in our boundaries east of Redwood Road and in the Harvey Heights neighborhood. Enrollment Smith Elementary serves approximately 580 students from kindergarten through sixth grade. We also house two preschool classrooms. Approximately 84% are Caucasian, 3.6% are Pacific Islanders, 1.8% are Asian, 8.5% are Hispanic, 1.5% are African American, and 0.1% American Indian. Computers and technology All classrooms are equipped with a ceiling mounted LCD projector and a sound system. We have two computer labs; one for YPP testing and the other as a project lab. Trust Land monies fund a YPP Lab Coordinator to support students and teachers in weekly curriculum assessments. Our STS is in the building for support two days per week. Chinese Dual Language Program Beginning in the fall of 2009, first grade students will have the opportunity to participate in the Chinese Dual Immersion Program. Students will receive core instruction in math and social studies in Chinese and reading and language arts in English.
