School background
Churchill Junior High School is located on the east bench of the Salt Lake
Valley just above Wasatch Boulevard close to the Wasatch Mountains and canyons.
Churchill has a diverse population of students coming together from a large
geographic area. Academic achievement is strongly emphasized. Extracurricular
activities abound to aid students in the discovery, exploration,
and development of individual talents and interests.
Churchill students perform well above the national and state averages on Iowa
Basic and Criterion Referenced Tests. Churchill scores on these tests are some
of the highest in the state.
Enrollment Churchill has an
enrollment of approximately 680 students in grades seven, eight, and nine.
Churchill houses five classes from the Utah School for the Deaf and Blind -
three deaf and two blind. Many students enroll at Churchill from surrounding
school districts. During the early enrollment period (December 1 through the
third Friday in February) students and parents interested in a junior high where
there is high expectations of academic achievement may apply for admission.
Churchill’s reputation for high academic achievement and extracurricular success
encourages many parents to enroll their students at Churchill.
Computers and
technology Churchill has networked classrooms and five computer labs. All
classrooms have digital projectors that are connected to computers, DVD players,
and voice enhancement systems to facilitate effective instruction. Churchill has
its own
website where parents are able to access student grades, teacher web pages,
and e-mail addresses.
Student promotion Students promoted from
Churchill primarily attend Skyline High School. At the end of their
ninth grade year students attend an end-of-year activity celebrating their
successful junior
high experience. This activity, sponsored by the Churchill Junior High PTSA, has
consisted
of a catered dinner and dance.
