Frequently Asked Questions
School Boundary and Address Inquiries
- Can I get help after business hours?
You may access an online boundary lookup Click on
this link "Boundary
Lookup." Once on the parents’ page,
find the hypertext that says “School
Boundary Inquiry” and click on it. On the right hand side you
will find a box labeled “Links.” Select the “Instructions” hypertext
and read the directions carefully. Then select “Granite Boundary
Lookup” in the “Links” box and use the “locate
address” button and “identify” button on the toolbar
to locate the schools serving that address.
- What should I do if the online school boundary lookup is not
locating an address?
Retype the address. Be sure to list the house number first and
the street name second. If the street name has both a coordinate
and a text name,
try using the text name instead.
For example: 6601 S 5095 W ? 6601 S Beargrass Rd
If you have correctly entered the address and are still having trouble,
call our office at (801) 646-4123 or email Tracy Atkin at tracy.atkin@granite.k12.ut.us
and explain your difficulty. Be sure to include the address you were
searching in the email or phone message.
- Do you have maps available of a school boundary?
Online maps of the district are available at this website by clicking on the Boundary Maps link. Individual school boundary maps may be viewed or
downloaded. If you need more detail, you may request a boundary map of a specific
school by contacting our department. We are able to fax, email, or mail
a map. Please specify how you would like the map sent to you. Include
your mailing address in your request if you want a map mailed to you.
Telephone: (801) 646-4123
Email: tracy.atkin@granite.k12.ut.us
- Can I choose the school I wish my student to attend?
December 1 through the
3rd Friday in February are the dates for parents
to exercise their school-choice option. If you want your student(s) to attend a
school
other than the school in your home boundary, you are required
to complete an application and submit it to the open-enrollment school
of your choice. The "Application for Student to Attend
School Out of School or District Boundaries Form” (Window Application)
is available in the requested school's office. A $5.00 processing fee
(must)
accompany the application.
Granite School District students will
be given first priority for placement in participating schools. All
other applications are handled on a
first-come, first-served basis and will be stamped with the date and time
received. Each application is individually screened and considered, based
on available space by building grade, class, or program. The
requested school
has until March 15 each year to notify you of acceptance. Parents will
have until April 1 to confirm to the school that their student(s)
will actually attend.
If your students(s) are accepted on a Window Application, it is not
required that you reapply the following school year—as long as
space is still available and the student(s) remain in this school.
As in the past,
when a student moves from elementary school to junior high, or from
junior high to high school, there is no automatic feeder system. Students
on
permits in the 6th and 9th grade, who wish to attend a school outside
of their home school boundary, must again apply during the window period
to request the preferred school.
If you miss the December 1 through February window period, you may
then apply for your student to attend a school out of your home boundary
based
on "special need." The Special Need Permit is granted for
one year only. Special Need Permit forms can be obtained by contacting
your
home boundary school.
- What should I do if my child requires special education services and
is changing schools?
Special education services are arranged through the boundary school serving your address. Please contact the school directly with special education service issues.
- What is the Annual Population Review Procedure?
The Granite School District Board of Education has taken measures to address boundary concerns and population issues in a proactive way. The Annual Population Review Procedures were developed to provide for annual study of these issues. The procedures require public input and board review and guidance at multiple times during the process as boundary concerns are studied and options to address those concerns are developed.
-
Has a decision on my school boundary already been made?
No decision will be made without considering public input at several points in “Annual Population Review Procedures
.” The procedure used by
the board requires a
thorough review of any boundary change or closure prior
to action taking
place. Public input is required at multiple points in the
process. Refer to the "Public Meetings" link to see
the scheduled public meetings. School
committees review proposals and
recommendations and provide feedback prior to their presentation to the
board in September. The Board of Education studies
proposals in August. Recommendations
are presented
to the Board of Education in September. The
Board of Education selects which, if any, recommendations are presented
to the
public
for further
input. Theses recommendations are presented for public input in October
in open house meetings. In November the Board of
Education first studies
the recommendations
and the public feedback in a study session. Then
the board will review the options in their first board meeting and
take action
in the
second board meeting. Public input may be taken at each public board meeting. The
Board of Education requires extensive public review and
comment prior
to making
a decision.
-
How can I have input into the decisions being made?
Open house meetings are held in October. Patron comments and recommendations are encouraged at that time. In addition, comments regarding school boundary issues may be mailed, faxed or emailed to the Planning and Boundaries Department
. All written comments are copied
to the
Board
of Education and Superintendency.
-
When
will decisions be made about boundary changes?
Final decisions are made in two board meetings in November. In the first board meeting, the board of education will review the recommendations. They may choose at that time to amend or delete recommendations. In the second board meeting, the board takes a final vote on the recommended boundary changes. Patrons are encouraged to provide input between the first and second board meeting and may also attend the meetings.
