When do I need a Doctor’s note?
If your student sees a doctor anytime during the school day or misses days due to an illness, it is always a good idea to provide a copy to the school to decrease the number or unexcused absences.
How many days can my student miss per year?
Seven (7), after seven the school may ask for doctor’s documentation regarding further absences.
What is the tardy policy?
Each school develops and implements a tardy policy. Contact your school for additional information.
I am planning on leaving the country, what do I need to do?
Contact your student’s school prior to leaving. Inform the school how long your student will be gone. If your students will be gone for more than ten consecutive days, your student shouldl be un-enrolled and re-enrolled upon return. Make-up work may or may not be provided.
We are going on vacation, are the days excused or unexcused absences?
This decision is per the principal’s discretion (please see Granite School District's Attendance Policy).
Can I call the school to excuse my student?
A guardian may excuse their student seven (7) times per year. A guardian can call the school, but should always follow the call up by sending a note from guardian or doctor.
What must a doctor cover in a doctor’s note?
When providing documentation to your school, the doctor should list all days that the student has missed due to illness. Contrary to belief, a doctor does not need to disclose the nature of the medical or counseling visit. However, documentation should address whether additional absences are anticipated due to the illness. If it is anticipated that significant days will be missed, the doctor should discuss whether the student can participate in a traditional school setting or if an alternative form of education (e.g. home and hospital) should be provided during the acute medical crisis.
