Does the size of a district have
an impact on student achievement?
National research does show that in some of the largest districts in the
country, Los Angeles, Miami-Dade, Detroit, for example, - all of which have
hundreds of thousands of students - student achievement as evidenced by test
scores is lower than in smaller districts around the U.S. However, a recent Utah
study of districts within the state showed no difference in student achievement
between large and small districts. It is important to note that Utah’s largest
districts are small in comparison to the large districts studied nationally.
