What would happen to employees?
This question has an often repeated but vastly over-simplified answer: Employees will be allocated as needed between the districts – there will be enough jobs to go around. Unfortunately, there is much more involved and we do not have complete answers. The law says:
(1) Upon the creation of a new district:
(a) an employee of an existing district who is employed at a school that is transferred to the new district shall become an employee of the new district; and
(b) the school board of the new district shall:
(I) have discretion in the hiring of all other staff . . .
This says nothing however, about central staff (bus drivers, instructional specialists, grounds and maintenance workers, etc.) or staff assigned to multiple schools (reading specialists, music specialists, etc.) or a group of schools in general (nurses, special education support staff, etc.). Just as it takes lots of “beans and bullet” folks to support one soldier on the ground, teachers enjoy the services of support staff as well. The law is silent about the support staff.
