Would Granite District be willing to lease space in offices or other facilities to a new district?
It is our observation that governmental entities tend to
seek to establish independent identities. For example, when Holladay City
incorporated and separated from Salt Lake County, city leaders took steps to
create their own city offices rather than to lease space in the county
administration building. Over time, a new school district would conceivably seek
to be a “real” district with its own facilities and identity.
In addition, if Granite suddenly had vacant space, for example in its district
office or kitchen facilities, it would likely look first at enhancing services
to its own students rather than lease space to another school district. For
example, the Granite Education Center houses Wilson Elementary School, the
Granite Technical Institute, Granite Peaks High School and other programs. The
district has been contacted by a number of agencies, such as the County Health
Department, Work Force Services and others, who would like to have space in the
GEC. If there were vacant space in the GEC – or other district facilities – the
district would probably opt toward building partnerships with entities that
would directly enhance services and opportunities for its own students and
patrons.
