School background West Kearns Elementary School was built in 1954 with later additions to meet the growing population of the neighborhood. For many years, the building housed two schools; an upper grade school and a lower grade school with student populations as high as 1400 students! As the residents in the area matured, the school has declined in population and it is now one school administered by one administration. However, it is still very large serving 720 students and more than 130 preschool students, including Head Start.
Enrollment The school is ethnically diverse with: BURMESE 2 CAMBODIAN (KHMER) 1 ENGLISH 446 FRENCH 4 LAO 1 NAVAJO 4 SAMOAN 6 SPANISH 296 SWAHILI 1
Computers and technology We have three computer labs. Each classroom has a minimum of five computers where students can access Imagine Learning English, Success Maker, Yearly Progress Pro, and address other classroom needs. All of our grades K-6 are equipped with Smart Boards in order to enhance learning.
Gifted Dual Language Immersion
West Kearns has a gifted Spanish / English language immersion program. Fifty percent of a student’s instructional time is spent in English and fifty percent in Spanish. All content areas are taught in both English and Spanish. The dual immersion classes use all district approved gifted/talented curriculum as well, including junior great books and the College of William and Mary curriculum. West Kearns currently offers the program in first, second, third, fourth, and fifth grades, and will be adding a grade level each year.
Student promotion Students promoted after sixth grade will attend Kearns or Kennedy Junior High. |
