What do professional school counselors do?

Professional school counselors:

• Advocate for all students in the school
• Plan and implement a school guidance program that serves all students and meets their needs
• Set annual goals to help all students experience school success
• Meet individually with every student at least three times during a school year
• Make sure all students have the best school schedules possible
• Keep accurate student records especially student progress toward high school graduation
• Conduct individual and small group SEOP (Student Education Occupation Plan) meetings
• Involve parents in the SEOP process
• Teach guidance activities to all students in areas of orientation, self discovery, life skills, and future planning
• Assist students in planning and preparing for their next steps through UtahFutures.org
• Facilitate referrals and identify resources for students who need extra support in school
• Articulate with other counselors in the school's feeder system (elementary, junior high, and high school)
• Support administrators, teachers, staff and overall school improvement goals
• Collect data about students and school demographics to improve and enhance guidance program services
• Participate in on-going professional learning
• Respond to school, student, and family crises
