What is Dual Language Immersion?

Dual Language immersion is a way to learn academic content while acquiring another language at the same time.  Students receive math, science, or social studies instruction in a target language, such as Spanish, French, or Chinese.  Because of the teaching strategies used, the students learn the concepts and skills for the subject area and develop the ability to read, write, speak, and listen in another language.

The goals are for the students to develop literacy skills in both English and the target world language such as Spanish, French, or Chinese while attaining academic achievement that is at or above their grade level as measured by Utah core testing.

Furthermore students will develop a world cultural sensitivity.  We strive to prepare Granite School District students academically, linguistically and socially for the challenges and needs of our global community.

How do I apply for a dual language immersion program?

If your child is currently in kindergarten, please fill out this online application for 2014-2015.  The registration window will close Friday February 21, 2014 at 4:00 p.m. All eligible applications received before the deadline will be placed in the lottery for spaces available in the programs.  You may still submit an application after the deadline.  However, your child will be placed on a wait list according to the date of application.  Some schools may continue to receive applications past the deadline if there are still spots available in the program.  See the list of schools to learn which schools are still accepting applications.

If your child is currently in 1st grade, use the online application process for 2013-2014.  If there is space currently available, you will be contacted to make the arrangements.  Otherwise, your child will be placed on a wait list, and you will be contacted when a space becomes available.  See the list of schools to learn which schools are still accepting applications.

Please note that if you do not live in the boundary of the school to which you apply, you must ALSO submit an open enrollment form to that school before the February 19, 2013 deadline in order for your application to be valid.   Open enrollment forms are available at any school. There is a $5 application fee for this form.

If you wish to have your child tested for the West Kearns Gifted Dual Immersion Program, please contact Gail Dawson at 385-646-4620.  Students from Gourley, Oquirrh Hills, South Kearns, Western Hills, Fox Hills and West Kearns Elementary will be tested in their neighborhood schools. Students who attend other schools must make arrangements to attend a testing session at the Granite Education Center, 2500 S. State Street, SLC, UT in the Spring.

If your child is currently in grades 2-6 and already speaks the target language, please contact the school directly to apply for any available spots.

Participation in a dual language immersion program is considered to be a comprehensive educational experience.  Beginning in the first grade, paired English and target language teachers collaborate to support student mastery of both the core content standards and target language skills in a full day program.  It is our expectation that students who participate in the language immersion experience participate fully in the school academic day and its prescribed instructional design.

How are students selected for the program?

All applications must be received by 4:00 p.m. on February 21, 2014.  School and district personnel will determine the number of spaces that will be available for students enrolled at each school, as well as spaces for students not currently enrolled and applying for special permit. The number of spaces available in each category is based on enrollment and may be different at each school, depending on the needs of the school to maintain the traditional and dual immersion programs. At that point, a lottery will be used to determine placement in the program.  Notification of selection or placement on the waiting list will be sent out by March 10, 2014.  Those who are selected must return the Parent Commitment Form by April 11, 2014. If not all of the spaces are filled, applications will be accepted until the program fills.

In the lottery process, students with siblings already enrolled in a dual immersion program who apply before the deadline will receive priority consideration.  Furthermore, our goal in a Dual Immersion classroom is to have 50% English speakers and 50% target language speakers.  Therefore we will hold a lottery for each group at the schools to fill the designated spaces.  Students who apply after the deadline are placed on a wait list in order of date of application and after those who applied on time in the lottery process.  We will also seek to serve Granite School District students first and offer placement to students outside of the district as space is available.

Please call Kerrie Neu (385-646-4611), Sharon Gracia (385-646-4238), or Carolyn Schubach (385-646-4530) if you have any questions.  If you are interested in the Gifted Dual Immersion Program at West Kearns Elementary, please contact Sheri Sorensen at (385) 646-4620  or e-mail Sheri to schedule testing for the program.
