What is Dual Immersion?

Dual immersion is a way to learn academic content while acquiring another language at the same time.  Students receive math, science, or social studies instruction in a target language, such as Spanish, French, or Chinese.  Because of the teaching strategies used, the students learn the concepts and skills for the subject area and develop the ability to read, write, speak, and listen in another language.

The goals are for the students to develop literacy skills in both English and the target world language such as Spanish, French, or Chinese while attaining academic achievement that is at or above their grade level as measured by Utah core testing.

Furthermore students will develop a world cultural sensitivity.  We strive to prepare Granite School District students academically, linguistically and socially for the challenges and needs of our global community.

How do I apply for a dual immersion program?

The online application process for 2012-2013 will be open from December 1, 2011, to February 17, 2012, at 4:00 p.m except for Valley Crest which will remain open until March 2, 2012.  Some schools may continue to receive applications past the deadline if there are still spots available in the program.  See the list of schools to learn which schools are still accepting applications.

Please note that if you do not live in the boundary of the school to which you apply, you must ALSO submit an open enrollment form to that school before the February 17, 2012 deadline in order for your application to be valid.

Open enrollment forms are available at any school. There is a $5 application fee for this form.

If you wish to have your child tested for the West Kearns Gifted Dual Immersion Program, please fill out this form.  Students from Gourley, Oquirrh Hills, South Kearns, Western Hills, Fox Hills and West Kearns Elementary will be tested in their neighborhood schools. Students who attend other schools must make arrangements to attend a testing session at the Granite Education Center, 2500 S. State Street, SLC, UT on March 22, 2012.  More information is available on the registration form online.

How are students selected for the program?

School and district personnel will determine the number of spaces that will be available for students enrolled at each school, as well as spaces for students not currently enrolled and applying for special permit. The number of spaces available in each category is based on enrollment and may be different at each school, depending on the needs of the school to maintain the traditional and dual immersion programs. At that point, a lottery will be used to determine placement in the program.  Notification of selection or placement on the waiting list will be sent out by March 12, 2012.  Those who are selected must return the Parent Commitment Form by April 6, 2012. If not all of the spaces are filled, applications will be accepted until the program fills.

In the lottery process, students with siblings already enrolled in a dual immersion program will receive priority consideration.  Furthermore, our goal in a Dual Immersion classroom is to have 50% English speakers and 50% target language speakers.  Therefore we will hold a lottery for each group at the schools to fill the designated spaces.

Please call Kerrie Neu or Sharon Gracia at (385) 646-4239 or Carolyn Schubach at (385) 646-4541 if you have any questions.  If you are interested in the Gifted Dual Immersion Program at West Kearns Elementary, please contact Sheri Sorensen at (385) 646-4620  or e-mail Sheri to schedule testing for the program.
