MESA – MATH ENGINEERING SCIENCE ACHIEVEMENT (STEP – Higher Education)
Imagineering Your Future
PROGRAM SUMMARY
The Granite program will consist of a MESA Academic Activity Club supervised by a School MESA Team at 9 high schools, 16 middle schools and 6 elementary schools . The District Educational Equity Office will provide coordination of the MESA Program by a District MESA Team comprised of an administrator, teacher leader, secretary, and a MESA community consultant who support the School MESA Teams. The academic needs of every MESA student will be assessed by the School MESA Team. Students recommended for academic support in math and science will be offered tutorial assistance. Academic competitions will be hosted for MESA students. Additionally, the district program will implement the following elements:
-
Enroll under served ethnic minorities and female (target) students into MESA.
-
Enroll target students in a seventh grade pre-algebra class at selected junior high schools, called MESA Math and offered as a core math class
-
Have a MESA Academic Activity Club at the 25 middle and senior high schools. Each club will have an advisor(s), who meets regularly with students for math and science tutoring, math and science activities, field trips, mentoring sessions, preparation for academic competitions (science fair) and guidance activities such as Math/Science oriented summer programs. This will also provide access to motivational speakers, interaction with female and ethnic role models and mandatory Parent activities.
-
Membership in a MESA Class means a student is also enrolled in the MESA Academic Activity Club and must participate in scheduled meetings, tutoring and academic events.
-
Personal Commitment: Students must sign and maintain academic achievement (minimum 2.5), attendance (meetings and school) and Citizenship contracts to be a MESA student in good standing.
-
An incentive program on student participation will be developed to encourage active participation
-
Advisors will send enrollment lists of students to the network schools to facilitate transition from school levels. Network recruitment visits to feeder schools are recommended for all school MESA Teams.
Teaching strategies will target identified students. Professional Development for MESA Math teachers will include REACH (Respecting Ethnic and Cultural Heritage), SIOP (Sheltered Instruction Observational Protocol) and attendance at selected Math/Science conferences and workshops. | | |
