Dual Immersion Program

What is Dual Immersion?
Dual immersion is a way to learn academic content while acquiring another language at the same time. Students receive math, science, or social studies instruction in a target language, such as Spanish, French, or Chinese. Because of the teaching strategies used, the students learn the concepts and skills for the subject area and develop the ability to read, write, speak, and listen in another language.

What are the goals of the dual immersion programs?
The goals are for the students to develop literacy skills in both English and the target world language such as Spanish, French, or Chinese while attaining academic achievement that is at or above their grade level as measured by Utah core testing.
Furthermore, students will develop a world cultural sensitivity. We strive to prepare Granite School District students academically, linguistically and socially for the challenges and needs of our global community.

How are students selected for the program?
School and district personnel will determine the number of spaces that will be available for students enrolled at each school, as well as spaces for students not currently enrolled and applying for special permit. The number of spaces available in each category is based on enrollment and may be different at each school, depending on the needs of the school to maintain the traditional and dual immersion programs. Once the application process closes on February 19, 2010, at 4:00 p.m., a lottery will be used to determine placement in each program. Students with siblings already enrolled in a dual immersion program and students who speak the target language will receive priority consideration. Notification of selection or placement on the waiting list will be sent out by March 15, 2010. Those who are are selected must return the Parent Commitment Form by April 9, 2010.
Please call Kerrie Neu or Sharon Gracia at (385) 646-4239 or Carolyn Schubach at (385) 646-4541 if you have any questions. If you are interested in the Gifted Dual Immersion Program at West Kearns Elementary, please contact Sheri Sorensen at (385) 646-4620 or e-mail Sheri to schedule testing for the program.
Program Model
Students in the program will receive about 50% of their instruction in English and 50% in the other world language. Reading/Language Arts will be taught half of the day in English. Math, Social Studies, and Science concepts will be taught in the world language while strengthening the literacy skills in that language. Art, music, and P.E. will be taught in either language. Since these have programs have been implemented for over 25 years throughout the country, we will be utilizing best practices as identified by research in dual immersion.
Bilingual Teachers Interested in the Program
Each year we are in need of licensed elementary teachers that speak Chinese, French, or Spanish fluently to teach in the Dual Immersion programs. If you are a teacher that speaks one of these languages fluently and you are interested in learning more about this program, please contact Carolyn Schubach, Kerrie Neu, Kaye Murdock, or Sharon Gracia.
What are the requirements to be a dual immersion teacher?
Currently to teach in a dual immersion program you must have a current Utah Educator license and be proficient in the language of instruction. By the year 2010, dual immersion teachers in one-way programs will also be required to have a World Language Endorsement and have an oral language proficiency level of Advanced-Low. To teach in a two-way program a teacher must have a Bilingual Education Endorsement with an oral language proficiency level of Advanced-Mid.
