Granite School District Gifted and Talented Programs

In an effort to provide academic opportunities to children on all levels and of all abilities, Granite School District over the years has developed a continuum of services for gifted and talented students that is designed to meet the needs of high ability learners.  Each school has been asked to design a gifted program that offers some of these services to their students.  Cottonwood Elementary has outlined its goal for high achieving students in their School Student Achievement Plan (SSAP), it reads: “The gifted/high achieving students are served utilizing the cluster model with the core identified students (5%) in a classroom with a gifted endorsed teacher on each grade level which also includes other heterogeneous students.  The following programs will continue to be offered:  Future Problem Solving, Math Olympiads, William and Mary Language Arts, Junior Great Books, Language Arts for High Achievers, Science fair projects and accelerated curriculum.  Classroom teachers will differentiate curriculum based on individual student needs.”  This is only a small portion of our school’s SSAP which can be accessed on line through Granite School District’s website.

Each month Granite School District hosts a meeting where a parent representative from each school learns about the programs being offered on a District level as well as other information that might benefit parents of high ability learners and their students.  This meeting also serves as a forum for discussing the needs of high ability learners.  As the parent liaison from our school I would like to put together an email list of parents who might be interested in the information that comes from these meetings.  .  If you are interested in receiving emails updating you on school and district programs for high ability learners, please email me at larafrazier@yahoo.com.
