The school focus at Cottonwood Elementary is, first and foremost, that all students will learn at higher levels. We follow the tenets of a Professional Learning Community in engaging as colleagues in the ongoing discussion of three critical questions: 1) What do we want each student to learn? 2) How will we know when each student has learned it? 3) How will we respond when a student experiences difficulty in learning? All grade level teachers collaborate together on a monthly basis to discuss the above questions by sharing effective instructional practices, analyzing student data, determining interventions for students who need additional support in the grade level curriculum and working together on common goals focused on student achievement. As a faculty, we believe that good instruction is the key to increasing student performance. We continually strive to improve the instructional programs here at Cottonwood Elementary to provide the best academic program we possibly can for our students based on current research and best practices. The school’s instructional program follows the state core curriculum and we also offer an additional focus on the arts, a school science fair, a chess club and the STAR reading program with volunteer reading tutors. All this is possible with the wonderful support of our parent volunteers who provide hours of volunteer time to support these additional programs in our school. Our school PTA also provides additional leadership in the many programs they oversee to support the school. Additionally, our teachers offer additional achievement opportunities for students including Future Problem Solving (a school team reached the level of the International competition this past school year), Math Olympiads, the school science fair and the school Geography Bee.

It is an honor and a privilege to be the principal at Cottonwood Elementary. The teachers and parents have high expectations for our students and we offer a broad instructional program that not only focuses on literacy and math but encompasses the arts, sciences and healthy lifestyles as a Gold Medal school. My philosophy as a school administrator is that we are all lifelong learners. High-performing schools are never satisfied with “good enough” but are constantly looking for ways to improve and that all students will learn at higher levels. A positive school culture is essential to student learning along with open communication with all stakeholders in the school. We have a wonderful staff, a very supportive school community and, most important of all, our outstanding students that make our school a great place to be. |
