Descriptions of PTA Programs
SILENT AUCTION This program is the big fund raiser for PTA.  The volunteers provide donations of various assortments - everything from trips to toys.  Everyone comes and decides what they would lie to bid on, writes down their bid and the hightest bid wins.  It takes place one night each year, and several volunteers are needed to obtain the auction items as well as spend several hours at the auction.
SCIENCE IN ACTION This program is in conjunction with the Inter-Connect program at school.  A closet in the copy room is full of material for science experiments.  A volunteer makes sure there are supplies in the closet so when the teachers are ready to do an experiment, they pull the needed materials from the closet for the experiment.  One volunteer is needed to check the closet periodically throughout the year and then purchase (from the budget) materials needed to re-stock the closet.
REFLECTIONS Students submit entries in art, poetry, literature, music, photography, visual arts, collages, video or film, dance and theater.  Entries go before an independent panel of judges and may go onto different levels of competition through the year.  There is an assembly to recognize the students for their works.  The students have the chance to compete nationally also through the PTA organization.  The winning works are displayed at the PTA convention in the spring.  A volunteer is needed in the fall to find judges for the works and submit the winner to the local PTA council.  Also the volunteer is responsible for setting up the awards assembly and purchase awards with monies set aside through PTA.
CHESS CLUB This program helps teach the students chess.  The chess club meets once a week and will likely meet directly before school.  The children also compete, if they desire, in several chess competions throughout the years.  No chess experience is necessary to help and volunteers are always welcome.  Volunteers are needed one hour a week through the school year.
EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS This program is designed to make sure in case of a disaster the emergency packs in each classroom are filled.  During the first week of school the volunteers repack and redistribute the emergency packs to each classroom.  Food and supplies from last year are taken of each kit, then recounted and replaced in the new kits.  The PTA funds provide the food and several volunteers are needed to buy the supplies and repack the kits.  Several hours are needed at the beginning of the school year.
RED RIBBON WEEK This program is sponsored by the Naational PTA for children to focus on drug and violence awareness.  There are various themes each day to remind the children not to use drugs.  Volunteers are needed to help plan and coordinate activities, assemblies and curriculum for one week in October.
GREEN RIBBON WEEK This program is held the second week in September.  This week is focused on pedestrian safety.  Volunteers are needed throughout the week to plan and carry out activities such as having the children walk to school in the morning ect.
BOOK FAIR This program is during the month of March right around SEP conferences.  All proceeds from the Book Fair go directly to the school's library.  Volunteers are needed to work several shifts before school, during lunch and during the SEP conferences.
BUSINESS PARTNERS Volunteers are needed to be a liason between the school and the businesses.  The volunteers will establish a relationship with the business throughout the year, letting them know of ways they can support the school.  Marie Callendars has been a business partner for many years and often supplies the teachers with pies during Teacher Appreciation Week.
FIELD DAY This day is at the end of the school year - an end of school celebration.  The president of the PTA arranges various activities for the students for this day. Volunteers help with games, food, etc. on this day.
