                        COMMUNITY COUNCIL MINUTES-1/26/09

Welcome! We had in attendance Terri Bawden, Teri Tillotson, Ramona Barela, Maria Arellano, Juan Reyes, Paul Gadilauskas, and Yvonne Pearson. The meeting was recorded on the digital recorder from the district.

No minutes were read as the meeting in November was cancelled and there was no meeting in December.

We discussed openings on next year’s council. Laurie Lafevor will be on her second year of term next year and so can remain on the council. Teri Tillotson is completing her second year this year and so we will need a new faculty member for next year to replace her. Next year Ramona Barela will be completing her second year of her second term, so she can stay on for next year. Mayra Vazquez, Alma Hernandez, Marbella Orozco, and Maria Hernandez, are in their first year and so can remain for next year as well. We hope Maria Arellano and Juan Reyes will be on the community council for next year too.

Ramona Barela reported on her December 5, 2008 district bus tour. She was able to visit Olympus Junior High where they focused on teaching the “whole” child by including fine arts, music, dance, and stage productions. Then they went to William Penn Elementary where they saw an example of the dual immersion program. Taylorsville High was next with the World languages program featuring Chinese. West Lake Junior High is a title I school and showed the AVID program and their parent/family center. Monroe Elementary school talked about their ESL program and school wide reading program called Imagine It. Granite Technical Institute has numerous programs that high school students can take even if it is not offered at their high school. These programs provide further training and/or employment. The tour ended with a luncheon provide by the culinary arts department.

We were able to move Ault’s proposal to Trustlands funding instead of QTSA to open up some additional funds for QTSA proposals. We had 5 new QTSA proposals:

*DeAnne Willie on condensing student reader stories for 2nd and 3rd graders. This was approved on the contingency that it was teacher requested or stories will be back to back, or questions will be on the back of the condensed stories. The cost for Willie’s proposal is $372.

*Dianne Jones proposed copying pictures off the internet to help 1st graders learn more vocabulary words and it was approved by the council for $1680.

*Lori Dragoo wanted to make word sorts and activities for 2nd grade decodable books and was approved by the council for $454.35.

*Lori Dragoo proposed another of doing toughie charts for all 1st grade decodable books. Toughie charts would include phonics, review, and story words for blending. This was approved by the council for $1,211.60.

*Our last proposal was also by Lori Dragoo. She wants to do an after school progam for math & reading tutoring for 1st graders.  She would take 5 students from each first grade class.  She would also be working with Davis and substitute if needed with Johnson. This was approved by the council for $2,600.84.

See attached sheet for all QTSA proposals that have been approved for this 2008-2009 year by the community council.

Our next Community Council meeting is scheduled for February 23, 2009 @ 4:15pm.
