our regular teachers. |

C.
R. England Trucking |
Jerry Welty
has been teamed with Ms. Donnelly's class for three years. Jerry
is a poet who writes about people he meets in his traveling endeavors.
He lives in Heavener, Oklahoma with his wife, Glinda. He visits
the class whenever he is in West Valley City and e-mails them from the
truck wherever he may be. The students question him about where
he is, where he is going, what he is hauling, and most importantly,
"When are you coming back?" They learn the distance from
one location to another. Jerry sends postcards with information
about the states through which he travels. The information on the cards
includes the state symbol, motto, nickname and state bird. He
buys state pins to present to the class when he visits. The class discusses
the state and the student who can name the state capital, places the
pin on the classroom U.S. map. The correspondence doesn't end
there. The students write to Jerry at his home and he replies
to each of their letters. Every student
receives a T-shirt with the Hillsdale Hawk Logo and Adopt A Driver Friend
written on it.
A close relationship has developed between Jerry
and the class. The students become very excited when they see Jerry's
truck pull up. They eagerly greet him and he knows them all by
name. He has become involved in other ways. When the students
have 100% work completion for a term he congratulates them with a gift
certificate to McDonalds. The students try harder to get 100%
work completion. He visits often
enough that the relationship goes on from year to year.

United
States Social Studies is included in the fifth grade curriculum.
To enhance student learning, C. R. England Trucking sponsors the Adopt
A Driver Program. Long haul drivers are teamed with a fifth grade
class. Through this association the students learn valuable information
about the various states.

McDonalds
We'd like to thank the West Valley
City McDonalds for helping in our school. McDonalds provides dinners
for teachers on the night when our teachers put in a whole day of
teaching and then also stay to meet with parents for SEP Conferences.
They volunteered to provide punch and cookies for kindergarten registration
and orientation. Occasionally, McDonalds also helps us give reward
lunches to students who have significant achievements. We appreciate the valuable contributions
our business partners make to our school and the community. Please
patronize them whenever possible. |
Superior Water
Superior Water volunteered
to improve the drinking water for the students at Hillsdale by installing
water filters in the drinking fountains of the halls and classrooms
at Hillsdale. Now students can drink water free from minerals. In
November, all the drinking fountains were fitted with filters. A special
thank you to Superior Water for this service. |
Meineke
Meineke at 2190 W. &
3500 S. has offered to donate 10% of the bill to Hillsdale when the
customer mentions Hillsdale School at the time of service. We appreciate
their help because this money can be used to finance the extra educational
needs that teachers would like, but is not funded. Thank you Meineke!
