Principal’s Message:

I would like to take a moment to introduce myself and tell you how impressed I am with the students and faculty at Hillside Elementary. My name is Jean Gowans and I am the new assistant principal. I am shared between two schools, spending odd numbered days at Hillside and even numbered days at Hillsdale. I taught 1st and 3rd grades for ten years at Pioneer Elementary and Jim Bridger Elementary. Last year I was an intern assistant principal at Copper Hills Elementary, Hunter Jr. High, and West Valley Elementary. I love working with students in an educational setting.

Even though I have been at Hillside for only a few weeks, I have been impressed with the friendliness and dedication of the students, parents, and faculty. I have found that everyone is concerned about student safety and maximizing student learning. I anticipate a great year with a lot of academic growth and many fun social experiences for all of our students.

We recently completed the first SEP conferences and thank all who participated. Parents and teachers working together create a winning environment for students. Another opportunity for parents and students to enjoy time at school together will be the Family Night being held on October 6, 2006 from 6:00 - 7:45 p.m. A pizza dinner will be provided free of charge and three fun activities will be available to help you learn more about what is happening at Hillside. Watch for a flier with more information and plan to join us for this fun event.

Being at school and arriving on time every day is very important to your child’s success in school. When students arrive late, they not only miss out on important instruction, but also interrupt other students’ academic instruction. We urge all students and parents to put forth an effort to have students arrive at school on time. The first bell rings at 8:45 and the tardy bell rings at 8:50. Classes begin promptly at 8:50. The Hawks on Time (HOT) program tracks classes who have 100% of their students on time and provides incentives for those who reach this goal on a consistent basis. Please help us and your students by helping them arrive on time, ready to learn.

Thanks for all you do to help make Hillside a great learning environment. Please feel free to stop in at the office with your questions or concerns, or just to become acquainted. I look forward to meeting all of you.

Mrs. Gowans

Ident-A-Kid

The Child Identification Program, Ident-A-Kid has been scheduled again at Hillside. This program will provide parents the opportunity to have current identification cards for their children in case of an emergency. Indent-A-Kid will be at the school on Tuesday, September 19 for Tracks A & D and on Thursday, October 5 for Tracks B & C.

Cost of Milk ticket increased to 30 cents!!!

Thank-you for helping your child arrive on time for school. Each child is working together with their class to earn prizes for being on time. Being ON TIME promotes success in learning

Our Hawks On Time competition

has been successful. Keep up the great work. BE ON TIME!

Message from the PTA President:

Welcome to a new school year. The PTA has a lot of fun things planned for the year. the first big thing coming is our fundraiser. The PTA will only have one fundraiser this year. It will begin in October and will be the same as last year, Lehi Roller Mills, discount restaurant cards and candybars. We know parents don’t look forward to fundraisers, however it is necessary for the PTA to have money to keep the programs we have sponsored for years to continue. Examples of some of the programs are maturation, accelerated math & reading, field trips, presidential fitness, eye screening, reflections and field day, etc. Included in this newsletter is a list of board members. There are sill many openings, we would love your help. Our PTA membership is still very low please know just because your are a member of the PTA it doesn’t mean you have a job on the board or even have to help with activities. It means you have a voice in what your local and state PTA do. If the goal of 300 members is reached we will have a sno-cone party for the entire school. The cost of a member ship is $5.00. I look forward to working with the parents, students, and staff at Hillside. If you have questions or concerns, please give me a call at 967-8490. Our next board meeting is September 12th. Let’s have a wonderful year!

Does your child have a star? Do you want to know more?

For every parent, who joins PTA all of their children will receive a star with their name placed on the "Explore PTA" bulletin board just outside the lunchroom. The children pass this board everyday. If your child or children do not have a star, sign up today to get them one. You DO NOT need to put in any volunteer hours to be a member of the PTA. You can donate money and have a say in what happens at your school without having to take any extra time. Membership is only $5.00 per adult. Each year the PTA helps pay for many important activities, such as; Field Day, Eye Screening, Safety Fair, Family Nights, Presidential Fitness, 6th Grade Promotion, and many, many more. Help us reach our goal of 300 PTA members. Dads, grandparents, aunts, uncles, neighbors, daycare providers are all encouraged to join. Please help us make 2006-2007 a great year.

The theme for Reflections this year is "My Favorite Place."

Start working on your entries now; the deadline is November 8th. Students are allowed one entry per category, so you don't need to dojust one. Categories include literature, music, photography, visual arts, dance, theatre, film/video, and 3-D art. Rules can be picked up in the office.

Drop-off & Pick-up of Students

Please help us keep the bus zone in front of the school clear for the buses. We have buses arrive before and after school and also midday for preschool. All drivers, including those for kindergarten, will need to use the parent parking lot for drop-off and pick-up. No parents are allowed to pull into the staff parking north of the school, as that would involve driving through one of our student crosswalks. Also, please remind your children to use the crosswalks when coming or leaving the school. Thanks for helping us keep all our students safe.
