INDIVIDUAL DEVELOPMENT

Art Program: Parent volunteers present a prepared art lesson on an art concept and master artist to a class of students several times a year. Art expertise is not necessary.
Music Appreciation: Periodic music instruction using chimes and other instruments is given by parent volunteers to show students a variety of musical styles. This is often conducted for fifth and sixth grade students in place of band or orchestra, for those students not participating in those programs. Basic musical knowledge is helpful.
Reflections: The National P.T.A. sponsors a Reflections Contest to enrich arts curriculum and encourage student creativity in music, art, and literature. This year's theme is "Diversity Means…" Parent volunteers help in promoting the contest and in judging student entries. Entry form Parent consent/media release Rules
Science Fair: Promotes a hands-on approach to science experimentation. Students create their own projects and compete on a school, district and state level. Parent volunteers help facilitate the fair by setting up displays and judging student projects. Tuesday, January 17, 2012: 5th and 6th grade fair; Friday, February 3, 2012: K-4th grade fair.
6th Grade Promotion: Parent volunteers provide a year-end activity for all sixth graders to celebrate their elementary achievement. Parents assist in planning the event and chaperoning students.

EDUCATION & FAMILY LIFE

Author Studies: Volunteers spotlight a specific author, their writing style and work in monthly lessons that are age and grade appropriate. This program helps promote a love of reading and exposure to a variety of books. Materials are available in the library.
Book Fair: Morningside PTA runs two Book Fairs that coincide with SEP Conferences in the fall and spring. These fairs provide an opportunity for students to buy quality books while helping purchase new books for our library and classrooms.
Junior Achievement: Supports the social studies curriculum with a focus on civic and governmental services. Parent volunteers present six prepared lessons to a class. This program starts in November.
Books & Bagels: This fun event will occur monthly, one grade invited each month. Students and caregivers will be invited to come to the school for a light breakfast and time to read with their child and meet other parents. Parent volunteers help coordinate the food and facilities.
Literacy Week: This is week filled with events where students and their families can participate in a variety of reading activities. January 9-12, 2012
Family Activity: An activity planned where the entire family can participate.

COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT

Classroom Volunteer Coordinator: Parent volunteers assist in the classrooms with parties, field trips, monthly art and music lessons, etc. Volunteers have a great opportunity to assist the teacher as needed.
Blockwalk Family Carnival: This is Morningside's annual PTA fundraising event the kicks off the year. The community gathers together to walk the block around the school while enjoying food, entertainment and fun activities. Volunteers assist in planning, staging and staffing the event as well as soliciting donations for the silent auction. September 16, 2012
Beach Day: Games and fun water activities are provided to the students as our year end celebration. Volunteers help to conduct the fun and provide refreshments. Thursday, May 31, 2012
Teacher Appreciation: Parent volunteers produce a week of activities focused on celebrating and thanking our wonderful teachers.
Hospitality: Our PTA offers the teachers three luncheons during SEP conferences. Volunteers coordinate the food.
Partners in Education Coordinator: A Parent Volunteer works with local businesses to create a relationship that will benefit the school as well as promote publicity for the businesses.

SAFETY & HEALTH

Gold Medal Schools: This program makes it possible for elementary schools to provide physical activity and healthy nutrition and lifestyle choices at a time when budget cuts and testing requirements overshadow physical activity and nutrition. This program is run by parent volunteers along with a Gold Medal Schools Mentor.
Red Ribbon Week: Volunteers coordinate a week of activities that promote healthy lifestyles and drug-free awareness. This coincides with the national campaign for a "Drug-Free America."
Emergency Preparedness: Morningside children are encouraged to make or purchase emergency kits with essential items to be used in case of an emergency. Volunteers help coordinate the kits and establish an emergency telephone tree to contact families if the need arises.
Vision Screening: Volunteers conduct the annual screening as directed by Granite School District. Parents assist students in the process and facilitate each class. Training is available for the committee chairperson.
Maturation Program: This program is for students in grades 5 and 6. Parent volunteers coordinate speakers and assemble hygiene kits.
RAD Kids: A program for 1st grade students where they learn empowerment techniques to promote safety and self-confidence.

SUPPORT SERVICES AND SPECIAL PROJECTS

Birthday Books: This unique program offers parents the opportunity to donate money for the purchase of new books in their child's name to enrich Morningside's library. Parents help in purchasing and preparing the books. This program has helped our library to become one of the finest and most extensive libraries in Granite District.
Birthday Recognition: Volunteers help to spotlight each student and teacher during their birthday month on a bulletin board as well as offer a small gift.
T-Shirt Coordinator: Parent volunteers assist in the sale and distribution of the school t-shirt.
Copy Coordinator: PTA offers help to teachers who need materials copied for classroom instruction.
Jump Team: Students practice jump routines and perform at various locations throughout the school year. This program is endorsed by the American Heart Association to promote life-long fitness and heart health awareness.
World Language: Early morning world language classes to be offered to students at a minimal cost. 2011-12 Information 2011-12 Registration
Physical Education Specialist: Parent volunteers assist PE specialist in weekly 45 minute classes.
Grant Writer: Volunteer responsible to search out and apply for available grants.
Service Club: Morningside Kids Care Service Club provides monthly activities for students in all grades who wish to make a mark on the world. Learn more

PUBLIC RELATIONS

Outdoor Marquees: Parent volunteers publicize upcoming events on the north and south marquees.
P.R. coordinator: Parent volunteer notifies the local media whenever there is an event at the school needing either publicity or that warrants recognition.
D.J., A.V. Specialist and School Photographer: Parent volunteers help provide music and assist with audio and visual needs when necessary at the school. They also strive to photograph and or video tape many of the fun events held at the school.
Publicity: Volunteers prepare school bulletin boards, banners, email messages and flyers, as necessary, in order to publicize and promote school activities and events.
