Oral Language/Vocabulary
- speak clearly with expression in communicating idead
- use context clues to determine meanings of unknown words
- use/understand synonyms, antonyms, homonyms and words with multiple meanings
Comprehension
- use reading strategies such as: making connections, asking questions, visualizing, predicting, monitoring/clarifying/summarizing
- identify the parts of fiction/non-fiction text
Writing
- write legibly in manuscript
- generate ideas and produce a 3-4 sentence paragraph correctly using editing skills and punctuation
2nd Grade Mathematics Expectations
By the end of the year each student should be able to:
Number Sense & Operations
- know the fact families up to 18
- recognize/write/identify place value/expanded notation of numbers from 0-1000
- compare and order numbers to 100
- identify ordinal numbers 1st-10th
- use different strategies to add/subtract one/two digit numbers
- name/write/model fractions as a whole/set: 1/2, 1/3, 1/4
Patterns
- sort/classify/label objects by three or more characteristics (color, shape, size)
- skip count/model by 2's, 3's, 5's and 10's up to 100 and relate it to repeated addition
- identify/create/label repeating and growing patterns
- solve missing addends (3+__=9)
Geometry/Measurement
- describe/classify/create geometric shapes
- determine the line of symmetry of an object
- sequence events on time
- identify/name/know the value of a penny, nickel, dime and quarter
- know the value of five coins that equal a dollar
- tell time to the hour and the half-hour
- understand/use calendar skills
- determine the perimeter of an object
- collect, sort, organize and interpret data using pictographs, tally marks, bar graphs and organized tables
