Comprehension
- comprehend multiple grade level texts using comprehension strategies such as: summarizing connecting, predicting, inferring, questioning and visualizing
- identify and use vocabulary in context, sequence, main idea, supportive idea, and inference in grade level text
Writing
- produce a multiple paragraphs product
- use the 6 Traits of Writing: voice, word choice, organization, sentence fluency, conventions and ideas
- use writing strategies of:
- pre-writing
- composing
- revising/editing
- publishing using a variety of media
4th Grade Mathematics Expectations
By the end of the year each student should be able to:
Number Sense & Operations
- recognize and write numbers from 0 to 100,000
- know numbers in ones, tens, hundreds, thousands and ten thousands columns up to 99,999
- use expanded notation up to 99,999 (90,000+9,000+900+90+9)
- compare 100 more/less, 1,000 more/less up to 10,000
- order and compare whole numbers and decimals to tenths on a number line
- know multiplication facts up to twelve
- multiply 2 digits by 2 digits up to 30
- use a variety of strategies to solve story problems
- divide 2 digit by 1 digit divisor, including remainders
- name, write and compare fractions: halves, thirds, fourths, fifths, sixths, eighths, tenths
- relate fractions to decimals
Patterns
- analyze growing patterns and multiple number patterns (+2, x3, etc.)
- demonstrate the distribution of multiplication over addition using a rectangular array (8x14=8 rows of 10, 8 rows of 4)
- solve equations involving 2 or more operations (4x3+2=__)
Geometry
- identify, draw, compare and describe: parallel lines, perpendicular lines, intersecting lines, quadrilaterals including rectangles and trapezoids
- understand and determine congruency, similarity and lines of symmetry of polygons
- identify slide (translation), flip (reflection) and turn (rotate) using manipulatives
- identify angles (right, obtuse, acute)
- identify the radius and diameter of a circle
- locate and give coordinates and regions on a map of Utah
Measurement
- recognize, estimate and measure in both metric and customary units of length, volume, weight and capacity
- read time to the nearest minute identifying A.M. and P.M. on a face clock
- add and subtract money to $20.00 or less
- find perimeter and area of rectangles and right triangles
- identify angles using a protractor (90°, 180°, 270° and 360° are the same as 1/4, 1/2, 3/4 and a full turn)
Data Organization
- collect, read, represent and interpret data from tables, graphs, charts, surveys and observations
- identify clusters and outliers on a graph
- find the probability with and without replacement
