Regular school attendance is vital to success in school. However, when a child has a fever, a sore throat, inflamed eyes, swollen glands, persistent coughs, ear aches, vomiting, running sores or other symptoms of acute illness that require home or medical care, the child should be kept home. The student is required to bring a note to the teacher explaining the absence. The student is responsible to make up the schoolwork missed while absent within three days or sooner after returning to school. The teacher has the responsibility to give the appropriate instructions in order for the student to complete the work successfully. Notes excusing students from going out to recess cannot be accepted for longer than one day at a time. Absences after three days require a doctor's note. Home/hospital instruction will be provided by Granite School District after ten consecutive days missed.

Parents, you may bring a birthday treat for your child's class. It cannot be anything homemade - IT MUST BE PURCHASED FROM A STORE. Please include a treat for all students in the class.
Please DO NOT send birthday party invitations to school. This causes students to feel left out and can hurt feelings.

Oquirrh Hills Elementary has several buses on a regular schedule. Buses are
also used extensively for field trips. Students are taught the rules to follow
when riding a bus. All students are expected to follow these rules. The bus
driver may suspend students if they refuse to behave and follow the rules. The
bus driver is responsible for notifying parents of warnings and suspensions.
The following bus rules are in effect at all times:
![]() |
1. Students are transported under the authority of the bus driver.
2. Students will remain seated anytime the bus is moving.
3. The bus driver may assign students seats.
4. Students shall not extend any part of their body through the bus windows.
5. Students should talk using normal conversation voices. Loud talking or vulgar language is prohibited.

7. Students will keep the bus clean and will not damage it in any way.
8. Students shall be courteous to the driver and to other students and passengers.
9. The emergency door will not be opened except in case of an emergency.
10. Children who do not attend Oquirrh Hills will NOT be allowed to ride the school buses. This includes younger family members.
11. Non-compliance of any of the above rules would result in losing the privilege of riding the bus.

We believe students, parents and school staff members have rights. Rules have been established to protect these rights for all.

![]() |
1. Vandalism
2. Fighting/Physical Contact

4. Blatant Disrespect and /or Disobedience
5. Sexual Harassment

There is a connection between proper dress/grooming and the successful operation of the school with respect to discipline and student achievement.
Students will wear clothing that is appropriate for school. Student dress will be modest, clean and suitable for the various learning activities going on at school. As students dress each morning, particular attention should be paid to safety, comfort and weather. Appropriate attire must be worn or your student will be required to change clothing.
Here are some rules to follow when deciding what to wear to school:
1. Students will not be allowed to wear clothes that are mutilated, cut off or immodest. Shorts may not be shorter than 2" above the knee.
2. Hats are not to be worn in the building.

ACCIDENTS, ILLNESS AND MEDICINES
Students involved in minor accidents (e.g. skinned knees, bumps and bruises, etc.) will be cared for by school personnel. If it is necessary for a child to be sent home because of an accident or illness, the classroom teacher or a member of the office staff will notify the parent to come and get the child. Please call for your child at the office.
If parents cannot be reached, the person designated for emergencies will be notified. If no one can be reached, the office will decide what to do. In all cases, a reasonable effort will be made to reach and notify the parent of the child. Therefore, it is imperative that the school be provided with up-to-date home, work and emergency telephone numbers.
District policy states that no medication (including aspirin) is to be administered to any student by a teacher, principal, nurse or school physician. It is required that a parent give written authorization and doctor's release with special instructions when it is necessary to administer any oral medication during school hours.
A student cannot bring medicine to school. The parent must deliver medication and it must be in the original bottle from the pharmacy.

Parents, it is your responsibility to check your child if you suspect head lice before sending them to school! Head lice can be picked up at a day-care center, movies, buses, school, other relatives, waiting rooms, using other peoples' combs and brushes, etc. Once considered a minor nuisance, head lice infestation is a wide spread problem. Although head lice do not transmit disease, they can be the cause of a secondary bacterial infection from scratching. They do need to be controlled. Getting head lice is not a sign of poor health habits or being dirty. It can happen to anyone. It is impossible for the school to check every child. Therefore, if you suspect your child has head lice, please check for yourself and then notify the school. Upon notification of a head lice case, the school will send notices home to all parents in the class so they can check their children. If you need additional information, you may also call the school. Students with head lice or nits within 1/2" from the scalp are not permitted in school, not can they ride the school bus. Proof of treatment must be provided upon return to school.

Parents are urged to keep children home when they show symptoms of illness. If symptoms occur while in school, parents will be contacted and asked to arrange for the child to be taken home.
Daily outdoor recesses are a valuable factor in promoting healthy classroom conditions. Playground activity that takes place during recess in part of the school day and your child is expected to participate in these activities. It gives them the opportunity to get out some wiggles, make some noise and socialize with their friends. All students need to go outside, even in cold weather. Please make sure your child dresses appropriately.

Utah law requires that every school child submit "Proof of Immunization" indicating that the child has received the required immunizations or that the child is exempt due to medical, religious, or personal reasons. Immunizations required are: 4 DPT or TD shots (a fifth is required if the fourth is given before the fourth birthday), 3 or more doses of polio vaccine, 2 MMR (measles, mumps, rubella - a third is required if the first is given before the first birthday) and 3 HIB. Documentation to verify student's immunizations must include the dates for each dose of vaccine received by the student. Parent or guardian records shall be accepted if they indicate the students name, birthday, type of vaccine administered, specific dates of immunization and name of doctor or agency administering the vaccine.

Research indicates that student achievement rises significantly when teachers regularly assign well-designed, meaningful homework and students conscientiously do it. Homework is most useful when teachers carefully prepare the assignment, thoroughly explain it and give prompt comments and evaluation when the work is completed. Oquirrh Hills is anxious to encourage greater achievement for its students through the following homework policy.

1. K, 1, and 2: at least 15 minutes given at the discretion of the teacher.
2. 3 thru 6: at least 15-30 minutes.
3. The teacher will evaluate all homework assignments with feedback given to the students as class time permits.
4. Each student is required to read on a daily basis. The teacher will let you know how many minutes each month are required.
5. No busy homework will be assigned. Work will be meaningful with "hands-on" orientation and directly related to the teachers' lesson design.
6. .Homework assignments will count toward grades on progress reports in each subject.
7. Homework emphasis will be on independent practices and on utilizing the resource materials in the home and community.
8. Homework will not only be made-up work (work not finished during class), but additional challenging practice. Make-up work will be designated as such.

Lost and found items are stored in the office. Students and parents may check at the office for missing items. To promote the quick return of lost items, please label your child's coat, hat, gloves, lunch boxes and backpack. If a child brings home something that does not belong to him/her, please return it to the school. Items not claimed will be donated to a local charity on a monthly basis.

Money for school breakfast and lunch accounts is collected on a weekly or monthly basis. Prices will be in accordance with the Federal and District guidelines. We cannot furnish breakfast and lunch on a credit basis. Students will receive a stamp on their hand, as well as a note home when lunch money is due. Students who do not have money in their account will be issued a partial lunch (milk and fruit). The free and reduced price lunch programs are available under the National School Lunch Program. Application forms are in the first day packet or at the office.
A school lunch consists of five food items: a meat item, a bread item, two or more servings of fruits and/or vegetables and milk. These five food items make up a lunch that provides one-third of a child's daily nutritional needs. Under the law passed by Congress (1986) a child may refuse to take one or two of the five items, but should eat everything else they take.
COST
Student lunch ..............................$1.10 ($5.50 per week)
Reduced lunch ........................... $0.40 ($2.00 per week)
Milk only ....................................$0.25 ($1.25 per week)

Please use the parent drop off zone. We also would like to ask patrons not to park in the bus parking and loading zones. Buses are restricted to where they can turn around and back up on the school grounds. Therefore, it is important that you do not park in these areas.

Students are expected to cooperate completely with the student safety patrol and our school crossing guards. Students should walk on the sidewalk to and from school, where it is possible, and they should walk on the side of the road facing oncoming cars where there is no sidewalk. Students should show proper respect for the property of others and to one another as they go to and from school.
Parents, we would encourage you to caution your children against child molesters. The Salt Lake

For the safety of students, staff and visitors to our school, the Granite Board of Education has a strict "School Safety" policy. It provides guidelines for dealing with disruptive incidents at school and at student activities. The intent of the policy is to give all students the right to attend school-sponsored activities without undue concern for their physical safety.
Granite School District is also committed to providing a safe and orderly environment in each school where students, staff, parents and all other people are treated with courtesy and respect. Any form of sexual harassment by staff or students, including any inappropriate verbal, written or physical conduct is strictly prohibited. Harassment should be immediately reported to an administrator, counselor or teacher.
The "Safe School" policy establishes procedures and penalties for:
![]() |
1. Threats or acts of violence
2. Possession of any type of weapon (real, look-alike or pretend)
3. Organized gang activity
4. Criminal behavior
5. Destruction or defacement of school property
Students who violate this policy will subject themselves to:
1. Mandatory parent/guardian conference
2. Law enforcement investigation
3. Suspension from school
4. Referral to the district Student Services Office to determine educational alternatives.
5. A one-year expulsion from school site
This policy has been adopted so that students and staff can feel safe and secure at school.

SEP conferences are held three times a year and are essential as the home and school work together to serve the best interests of the children.
The school staff welcomes special parent teacher conferences whenever the need for such arises. Parents are invited to call upon the principal any time her help is needed to assist with problems or concerns.

SKATEBOARDS, SCOOTERS, ROLLER BLADES AND ROLLER SKATES
These items create a safety hazard and are not allowed on school grounds. Please do not encourage your child to bring them to school. If these items come to school, they will be taken away and stored in the office until a parent comes to pick the item up.

STUDENT RELEASE DURING SCHOOL HOURS
Please remind your children that they are not to leave the school grounds during the school day (recess and lunch time included) unless the classroom teacher, the office or the pricipal grants special permission. The parent, in writing or in person, must request permission. Parents, please do not request your child be excused by making a phone call. Our office cannot always determine whether a phone call request is legitimate. We cannot risk your child's safety. The office will not be responsible for relaying messages to students. Please make arrangements with your children before they come to school as to where they should go, what they should do and where the key is. If it is necessary to pick up your child during the school day, you should come to the office to obtain his/her release.

Children are held responsible for the condition of textbooks, library books and Lightspan equipment checked out to them. A charge may be assessed if these items are lost or damaged beyond the usual wear and tear. They will be fined for any lost books and/or equipment assigned to them.
Teachers are not responsible for student pencil boxes or extra folders brought to school. Please put your child's name on any items they bring from home.

When a student is tardy to school, he/she must check in at the office. If the student is checked in by the parent or has a note, the student is not truant. However, students brought continually late by parents are considered tardy to school. The student may have a consequence or make up the time missed during recess if the tardy is determined to be inappropriate.

Students are NOT allowed to use the telephone unless they have a telephone pass from their teacher. School telephones are for emergency use only. Please make arrangements for your child to go to a friend's house before sending him/her to school in the morning. Students need to know how they will be going home - bus, walking, being picked up, etc.
All school notes and communication will be sent home on Thursdays in the Thursday folder. Please read the Thursday note enclosed in the folder and initial the folder. Good communication between home and school is essential to learning.

Please notify the school by phone, or by a note, when you move from the area. The school needs to know the following: the date of leaving, the name and address of the new school your child will be attending, and your new address. All school library books, textbooks and equipment must be returned before a student can be checked out and a transfer form is issued. Permanent records will be sent to the new school.

Toys should not be brought to school. They interfere with the learning process during class time. Items such as Game Boys, CD players, balls or items that distract from learning need to be left at home. If a staff member sees a toy, it will be taken away and a parent will have to come in and pick it up.

If money or valuables are sent to school for any reason, you should realize the responsibility your child will have. You may want to:
![]() |
1. Place the money in an envelope
2. Include a note inside stating reason for the money being sent
3. Place teacher's and child's name on the outside of the envelope
We discourage parents from allowing children to bring large amounts of money to school. Large amounts of money or unusual items of value taken to school by a student are normally questioned by members of the staff. In most cases we will call or contact home to check if this situation occurs. The school will not accept responsibility for loss or damage to students' personal property.
Parents are invited and always welcome to visit the school. When you do visit, please make your purpose and presence known by stopping at the office, signing in and obtaining a visitors pass. We CANNOT honor requests to allow relatives, friends and pre-school children to visit our school. Your understanding in this matter will be appreciated.
