REDWOOD CITIZENSHIP PLAN
Redwood
Elementary School takes a positive approach to citizenship development. We believe that students have the right to learn
and play in a safe environment. We
expect all students to behave appropriately and support the teaching/learning
process.
This plan
provides a consistent approach for teaching, reinforcing, and rewarding
positive behavior. Students are taught
what is expected of them in all school settings, and are instructed in the
consequences for inappropriate behavior.
This enables students from Preschool through Sixth Grade to achieve the
worthwhile goal of self-discipline.
Redwood
has five school-wide behavior expectations that govern behavior in every
classroom and school location:
|
EXPECTATION |
VIOLATION IS CALLED: |
|
Use kind words at all times. |
Verbal aggression |
|
Follow directions the first time asked. |
Non-compliance |
|
Keep hands, feet, mouth, and objects to self. |
Physical aggression |
|
Raise hand and wait to be called on. |
Talk out |
|
Stay on task. |
Off-task |
Each
teacher has the responsibility to instruct students and practice the
school-wide expectations and procedures both in and outside of the
classroom.
REWARDS
Students
who follow the school-wide expectations will receive the following:
þ Positive teacher attention
þ Contingent verbal praise
þ A positive self image
þ Valuable learning
þ Full participation in recess activities, assemblies,
and field trips.
þ Individualized classroom rewards
(examples include: team points, first in line, stickers, pat on the back, notes
to students, stamps, smiling teachers, pencils, special seat, positive call
home, earn-a-party, earned special privileges)
þ Ram Tickets (Ram tickets are given
for any positive behavior a staff member witnesses. Any staff member may reward any student for
any reason deemed appropriate. A focus
on the character theme of the month is valuable. Tickets may be entered into the weekly Ram
Drawing for the chance for a prize.)
CONSEQUENCES
Students
who disobey the established expectations will be assisted in the following
ways:
|
LEVEL ONE |
Warning. No parent
notification. |
|
LEVEL TWO |
Sit Away. A Sit Away form is completed by the student
while removed to a time out desk in the classroom. |
|
LEVEL THREE |
In-School-Recess-Suspension (ISRS). Teacher requires student to spend 1-13
minutes of recess in the classroom. A
Sit Away form is completed by the student. |
|
LEVEL FOUR |
Sit Away to another classroom. A Sit Away form is completed by the student
while at a time out desk in another classroom. Parents are contacted by telephonej. |
|
LEVEL FIVE |
Student is referred to the Alternative Classroom after 3
Sit Aways.
Teachers may also opt to refer students after 6 Sit Aways in the same week.
The completed AC form should accompany the student to the AC. Teacher attaches copies of the Sit Away
forms already administered. |
SERIOUS INFRACTIONS
A few
serious student behaviors warrant a skip in steps or immediate Level Five
intervention:
X Violation of the GSD Safe School
Policy involving injurious or repeated physical violence or possession of
weapons, real or look-alike
X Violation of the GSD Drug and Alcohol Policy
X Sexual Harassment
X Explosive or ungovernable behavior such as non-compliance, refusing to
relocate, throwing objects, and yelling.
If a
student refuses to move to the AC, the teacher will call the office for an
escort. If the student refuses to comply
with the escort=s directives or refuses to relocate
to the AC, the class will be relocated until the student=s parent or Granite Police arrive
to move the student.
REFERRAL TO THE OFFICE
Students
on their third AC referral or who have engaged in serious infractions will be
referred by the AC teacher to the Student Achievement Specialist (SAS)
and/or Principal after gathering written statements from the students
involved. The SAS or Principal will
conference with the student and administer one or more of the following
consequences:
Arrange conference with parent
In-School-Recess Suspension
In-School-Suspension
Home-School Suspension
Request for Granite Police investigation
Referral to the Granite Safe Schools Committee for placement determination
