Core Concepts
This is a very important year for your child. Sixth grade is the culmination of your child’s elementary experience. We hope to instill a love of learning and education that will continue on through your child’s academic life!
For a detailed description of the Sixth Grade Utah State Core please visit the following website: http://www.uen.org/coreDuring the year, your child will develop skills in literacy, fluency, comprehension, and spelling. Students will also learn to express themselves through writing using many different forms of writing.
By the end of grade six, students have mastered the four arithmetic operations with whole numbers, positive rational numbers, positive decimals, and positive and negative integers; they accurately compute and solve problems. They find prime factorizations, least common multiples, and greatest common factors. They create, evaluate, and simplify expressions, and solve equations involving two operations and a single variable. They solve problems involving an unknown angle in a triangle or quadrilateral, and use properties of complementary and supplementary angles. Students know about π as the ratio between the circumference and the diameter of a circle and solve problems using the formulas for the circumference and area of a circle. Students analyze, draw conclusions, and make predictions based upon data and apply basic concepts of probability.
Students will focus on time, people, and places along a historical continuum from the rise of civilization to the modern day. One-third of the year should be spent in the study of ancient cultures, one-third in the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, and one-third in the study of modern Europe. The influence of ancient cultures and European ideas on western civilization makes the sixth grade world connection. Using life, process, and character skills, sixth graders will gain a comprehensive awareness of the changes in our world throughout time. They will explore the beginnings of our governance system and practice the democratic process.

DIBELS
The Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills (DIBELS) are a set of standardized, individually administered measures of early literacy development. Students are assessed in their development of phonological awareness, alphabetic understanding, and automaticity and fluency. They are designed to be short (one minute) fluency measures used to regularly monitor the development of pre-reading and early reading skills. The DIBELS assessment is administered three times each year beginning September, Mid January, and beginning May. For additional information visit the DIBELS web site. -
Mathematics Benchmark Assessment
The mathematical benchmark assessment in a quarterly assessment. The benchmark assessments are designed to measure a students' progress in mastering State Math Core Objectives. Each benchmark assessment consists of multiple choice and performance based questions. As this assessment is not timed, students are given ample time to demonstrate their mastery of identified math core concepts. - YPP
Yearly Progress Pro (YPP) is a research-based, on-line assessment, instructional, and intervention tool that gives teacher and administrators specific frequent feedback on student progress in mathematics, language arts, and reading. YPP assessments also provide instant automatic, on-the-spot intervention and ensure classroom instruction is aligned to state and national standards. Students take the YPP assessment tests each week in the school computer lab.
