What is "The Big Six"?
Information Page for Teachers and Parents
In order for students to do a meaningful presentation of
reports or projects that are assigned as part of their research, they must plan and prepare well. A central part
of the new state core media curriculum for elementary schools adopted by the state office
of education is "The Big Six" program which was created by Mike Eisenberg and
Bob Berkowitz. This is a systematic approach to doing any research project.
How is it different?
Big Six Skills link information problem-solving and critical
thinking skills. Simply looking up information in the World Book Encyclopedia
because it is available involves a low-level of cognition. Using that encyclopedia within
an overall problem-solving strategy represents a higher level of cognitive learning.
Traditional library skills focus on knowing and understanding specific sources
(lower cognitive skills) versus the ability to use critical thinking skills and manipulate
that information into a meaningful solution.
