Who was Calvin S. Smith?

Calvin Smith Elementary was named after Calvin Schwarz Smith who was born May 29, 1890, in Salt Lake City, son of Josephy F. Smith and Mary Taylor Schwartz Smith.  He married Lucile Dimond, and they were the parents of seven children, who all graduated from the University of Utah.

Dr. Smith received his B.S. and M.A. degrees from the University of Utah in 1913 and 1923, respectively.  In 1928, he received his Ph.D. from the University of Chicago.

During World War I, Dr. Smith was a first lieutenant and a chaplain in the National Army at Large, 91st Division.

Dr. Smith was superintendent of public schools for Juab County (1924-27) and Granite School District (1928-39) and a member of the Granite School District Board of Education for 10 years.

He was a member of the Salt Lake County Library Board for 23 years; the branch library at 810 East 3300 South in Salt Lake City was named for him.

Dr. Smith served 3 sessions in the Utah Legislature and was a member of the Joint Legislative Committee.

Dr. Smith died at home on June 16, 1966, at the age of 76.

Calvin S. Smith Elementary School opened in August, 1979.   Dr. Smith's widow and other members of his family attended the dedication of the school in February, 1980.  An oil portrait commissioned by the family is on display by the office.
