If a student is absent that day he/she will be able to buy lunches on the first day of his/her return. You may pay by the week or by the month. Lunch (including milk) is $1.20 per day: $6.00 for a five day week.

Students checking in late need to come to the office to check in.

CHILDREN'S PERSONAL BELONGINGS: Children's coats, gloves, LUNCHBOXES, etc. should be marked for easy identification. This will aid in returning lost articles. Please check the lost and found throughout the year. There are many coats, etc. left in the lost and found at the end of the school year. Such things as balls and bats are to be left at home as well as toys, radios and similar playthings. Each bike should have its own lock and should be locked at the bike rack during school hours. Please encourage your children not to ride their bike on the school grounds. Lost items which have been found will be on display by the multipurpose room.
STUDENT RELEASE DURING SCHOOL HOURS: Once students have arrived at school they are not to leave the grounds at any time without special permission from their teacher(s) and the principal.
If a parent wants a child to be excused early, the parent must make the request in writing in advance or in person. Parents, for your child's safety, please do not call to make such a request because our office cannot always tell if a telephone request is legitimate. We do not want to risk your child's safety. If it is necessary to release a student during the day, a parent must come to the office and sign the child out of school.
If it is necessary to schedule a doctor or dentist appointment on a school day, it is suggested that it be scheduled early in the morning or late afternoon.
ATTENDANCE: The following is an attendance guideline for Truman Elementary based on the policy adopted by the Board of Education: All children of legal school age residing in the confines of the Granite School District shall be required to be in regular school attendance in accordance with the Compulsory Attendance Laws of the State of Utah. Regular and consistent student attendance is an important part of the school program and is essential for understanding and completing a course of study. It is recognized that some absences are necessary and approved by the school. In these cases the teacher will allow for make-up opportunities. Following each absence a note is to be sent with the child when he/she returns to school.
MEDICATION POLICY: Medication cannot and will not be administered to any student by a principal, teacher, or other school personnel without a CURRENT WRITTEN ORDER AND INSTRUCTIONS from the student's private physician and permission from the parents. The medication must be brought in by a parent or person 18 years of age or older and must be in an original, pharmacy or physician labeled container with the name of the student, the drug, the dosage, time of administering, purpose of medication and possible side effects.
PARKING LOT: For the safety of our students, please don't park in the "No parking areas." Students are to be dropped off and picked up at the curb. Do not park in such a manner that would necessitate students to cross in front of cars driving through the parking lot. We encourage you to have students walk to and from school whenever possible.
BUSES: We will have a bus that will bring students to school. Please do not park in or block the bus areas. Remind your children to use caution when they are around these zones. We once again ask that children who can walk to school do so, and thus eliminate as much traffic in the parking lot as possible.
HOMEWORK: Truman Elementary fully supports the district philosophy that homework should be assigned in such a way as to insure student growth and to reinforce, supplement, and compliment learning that takes place in the classroom. Homework should provide opportunities for each student to achieve his/her maximum potential.
The homework assignment is an extension of school work. It will be a part of the instructional program to reinforce, supplement and compliment daily classroom learning. It is assigned with the child's needs, growth, and individual differences kept in mind.
Although the amount of time spent each day on homework will vary for each student, the following is a suggested guideline:
Kindergarten 15 minutes per day
Grades 1-3 1/2 hr. per day
Grades 4-6 40 mins. to 1 hr. per day
DRESS STANDARDS: Harry S. Truman Elementary School supports the position that parents should oversee their student's dress so that it is safe, modest and clean. The school will take exception when a student's dress is grubby, suggestive or disrupts the class. Such items as short shorts, tank tops, halters, midriffs, and t-shirts with inappropriate sayings or that advertise alcohol or tobacco are generally not acceptable.
Please help your child know how to dress for weather conditions throughout the year. Hats are not to be worn inside, but may be worn outside to protect from the sun or inclement weather.
Add to School Rules: Fighting, vandalism, and disruptive behavior are not acceptable at Truman Elementary. If a child is involved in one of the above he/she will be sent to the office, parents will be notified, and may be suspended (in or out of school.)
SAFE SCHOOL POLICY: Due to numerous problems with weapons in schools in our district and other schools throughout the United States, the district has taken a very strong stand on the possession of weapons at school. Any violation that is determined to be severe by the school will result in an automatic three day suspension from school, and a mandatory law enforcement referral. At that time, parents will have to meet with district officials concerning readmittance to the student's home school.
Please review this policy with your children. We ask for your understanding of our concern for the safety of all children at school. PLEASE REVIEW THE ATTACHED COPY OF "SCHOOL SAFETY POLICY".
