The Upland Terrace Arts Committee was formed in 2006 to help increase student exposure to all areas of the fine arts. It has now evolved into the Arts, Recreation, Technology and Sciences (A.R.T.S) Committee. The new name will enable current and future committee members to provide funds for not only arts experiences, but other areas of need.

A.R.T.S. Committee Provides Pottery and Dance Classes

Has your child talked about creating a lasting clay sculpture or learning a dance made up from their phone number? In September, the 2nd and 4th graders had an opportunity to learn how to create a 3D sculpture of something they’ve learned about. Visual Arts Specialist, Kate Mooth will teach each grade how to create a sculpture, paint it and glaze it, so it can be fired in the school kiln.

The 3rd graders have been learning creative dance during their P.E. time once a week from Wendy Thurman of the U of U Virginia Tanner Children’s Dance Theater. The 3rd graders will present an “Informance” (an informal, informative performance) of their dances on Tues. Nov. 10 at 3:00 p.m. in the Multi-Purpose Room. Parents are invited.
All other grades will have their turn at learning dance throughout the year.

The Arts, Recreation, Technology and Sciences (A.R.T.S.) Committee is funding and facilitating both of these arts opportunities. A big thank you to Angela Folsom for coordinating the many logistics. Thanks also to the many parent volunteers who are helping to fire sculptures in the kiln.

Remember to send in “Box Tops for Education” from General Mills cereals and other participating products. Send them in with your child to put in the Box Tops Can in their classroom. If possible, please attach them to the Box Top charts that were sent home (it makes counting easier). The school receives money from Box Tops twice per year. Please send in as many as possible by Oct. 23 to meet the first deadline. Continue to save them throughout the year. Grandparents can also save them! Let’s boost up our Box Top totals this year, since the Wal-Mart plastic bag recycling program has been discontinued.

Thanks to the 63 families who participated in our Outdoor Photo Opportunity held in September! You helped raise more than $1,200 toward our art programs. A special thank you to John and Amy Garff for sharing their lovely gardens as the setting. Lindsay Denning and Mariann Bengtzen did a great job organizing this event.
