Upland Goes Green

This year Upland is going green! We want to educate the students as well as parents about what each one of us can do to take care of our beautiful community and world. The first step is being aware of our choices every day to recycle, reuse, and reduce. There are many simple things that we can do every day that can have big results
.
This month, we are focusing on reducing. One simple way to do this is to not idle our cars – thus reducing the pollution in the air. Children are the most susceptible to all the pollutants that our cars emit. The chemicals that our cars put into the air have been linked to cancer, immune diseases, allergies, and asthma. Our playgrounds should be a place where we make the air as clean as possible. The air will improve when we do our part.

Remember these simple facts when questioning whether to turn off your car. -Just 10 seconds or more of idling uses more gas than restarting your car.
- You are getting zero miles per gallon while idling.
- You can burn between a half gallon and a gallon of gasoline per hour when idling.
- Idling is bad for your car engine, the spark plugs, and the exhaust system.

So, if you drive children to and from school, please turn off your car while waiting to drop off or pick up children. Roll down your windows on warm days and bring a jacket in the car on chilly days to make yourself more comfortable.

Whenever possible, carpool so there are fewer cars on the road and better yet, try and walk whenever possible if proximately allows.

Grades 4-6 will be making posters to remind us of ways to recycle, reuse, and reduce, including turning off our cars while waiting in the parking lots. We are excited about making our school the best it can be in every way!

Thanks for all you do to help us in these efforts. If you have other great ideas of how Upland can go green, email your ideas to leslieschofield@comcast.net.
