Theory of Knowledge

THEORY OF KNOWLEDGE

In order to earn an International Baccalaureate Diploma, a student must take three courses at the higher level (2 years of coursework) AND three courses at the standard level. All six areas must be covered by those six classes. An alternative course from groups 1-5 may be substituted for the group six requirement (e.g., a student could take both History HL and Psychology SL and opt outof the art component.)

You may notice that for group 1 (primary languages) Hunter only currently offers English HL. Since a primary language IB course is required, every IB diploma-seeking student MUST enroll in this course.

Prepatory classes listed for ninth grade and tenth grade year are not required for the IB diploma, but are strongly recommended. It is the opinion of the IB Team (the teachers of the IB courses listed above) that these prepatory classes (e.g. honors sophomore English) are virtually a necessity for later success in the program. Some classes, like Spanish 4 if you expect to complete IB Spanish SL, are absolutely essential.

IB courses (both HL and SL) must be taken in the junior or senior year.  However, if a student has completed course prerequisites he or she may take the IB course in the 11th grade, even if the course sequence lists it as a 12th grade course.  (e.g., a student who completed Algebra II as a sophomore may take IB Math Studies SL as a junior.)

In addition to the six IB courses, all IB diploma-seeking students will be required to take a seventh class, Theory of Knowledge (TOK). This is a course in critical thinking designed to help student make connections among their various other IB courses. TOK is taught during the second semester of the junior year and the first semester of the senior year.

Below are sample student schedules. They represent some of the more popular options in the Hunter IB program. The actual IB courses are in CAPS. Non-IB courses are in Title Case.
