Hunter High School Constitution

 

Article I: Organization

    Section 1: The name of this organization shall be "The Associated Students of Hunter High School."

    Section 2: The official colors of Hunter High shall be navy blue, gray, and white; all uniforms, sweaters, jackets, etc., shall consist of these colors.

Article II: Membership

    Section 1: Students become members by payment of registration fees which enable them to vote in student elections, hold office, and participate in all activities.

    Section 2: Honorary membership is given to all faculty, staff, and administration.

Article III: Wolverine Advisory League

    Section 1: A representative body of students will comprise the Wolverine Advisory League (WAL).

    Section 2:
    1. The WAL shall be composed of 21 voting members-- six (6) SO's, nine (9) class officers, and six (6) WAL representatives (two from each class.)
      • The WAL shall have non-voting members. Each first period class shall elect a WAL member to represent them at all meetings.
      • The student body president shall be the president of WAL but shall have no vote, except in the case of a tie.

    Section 3:
    1. WAL representatives will be elected at the same time and manner as class officers.
      • No student shall be a WAL representative who has not submitted an approved petition and has a 3.0 GPA for each of the two terms prior to election.


    Section 4: Responsibilities of WAL:
    1. Facilitate petitions for students' rights.
    2. Make recommendations to the administration regarding school policies.
    3. Approve school calendar.
    4. Initiate student appointments and form committees to plan and implement school activities (e.g.,Homecoming, Freedom Week, etc.)
    5. Facilitate positive communications between student government officers and school organizations.
    6. Sponsor an assembly, dance/stomp and activities week.
    7. Develop positive relationships with the community.
    8. Judge elections and count returns.


    Section 5:
    1. WAL shall meet a minimum of once per month; dates and times of meetings to be decided by be WAL members.
      • Minutes will be taken by two WAL representatives and will be posted in a visible place no more than two school days following the meeting. A record of all WAL meetings shall be given to the student body historian at the end of the school year.
      • An agenda will be written by two WAL members and will be posted at least one week prior to each WAL meeting.
      • Two WAL representatives will insure that duties assigned during meetings have been accomplished.
      • No WAL member shall be responsible for more than one assignment.
      • Students should contact a WAL representative if interested in addressing WAL members.
      • Meetings will follow Parliamentary Procedures.

ARTICLE IV: The Student body and Class Officers

    Section 1:
    1. The student body officers shall consist of a: president, second vice president, secretary, historian, and activities chairperson.
      • Class officers shall consist of a: president, vice president, and secretary.
      • Two WAL representatives shall be elected from each first class.


    Section 2:
    1. Free elections will be held during lunch in the commons area. The person having the greatest number of votes shall be the winner.
      • "Write-ins" are not allowed
      • A person who is running for office may not participate in the election process.
      • All officers shall take the oath of office before assuming office: "I , do solemnly swear that I will execute the office of and will, to the best of my ability, preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution of Hunter High School."


    Section 3: Responsibilities of student body officers:
    1. President--presides over assemblies, WAL meetings, and other school functions, conducts SO meetings, represents the school at district or state activities, and delegates responsibilities to other officers.
      • First vice president--maintains financial records for all monies allocated to SO, oversees school clubs and organizations, and in the absence of the president, presides and delegates to class officers.
      • Second vice president--oversees school and community publicity regarding activities and student achievements, including the election of Homecoming royalty, and updates the marquee.
      • Secretary--maintains records, takes minutes and types agendas for SO meetings, designs ballots, and coordinates correspondence.
      • Historian--keeps history of school year, maintains complete set of yearbooks, school newspapers, publications, WAL proceedings, and directs the publication of the school directory.
      • Activities chairperson--plans and directs all SO activities and calendar, organizes and oversees all dances and stomps.
      • All SO shall build student morale and school pride, conduct elections, direct SO candidates in Grass Roots, and assist other SO's when needed.


    Section 4: Responsibilities of Class Officers:
    1. Seniors--build class morale, organize first term honor roll party, Sadie Hawkins, senior banquet, and graduation.
      • Juniors--build class morale, organize second term honor roll party, and junior prom.
      • Sophomores--build class morale, organize third term honor roll party, and sponsor one dance.


    Section 5: Grades and Citizenship for SO and Class Officers:
    1. Shall have a GPA of 3.0 two terms prior to election, during the term of election, and for each term in office.
      • Shall have no O's and no more than two 1's two terms prior to election, during the term of election, and for each term in office.
      • Shall be on probation for one term when GPA is less than 3.0 and/or if earns a O or more than two 1's during any term in office.
      • While on probation, student is required to perform duties of office but may not wear officer apparel or be recognized as an officer.
      • Conducts themselves in a manner unbecoming a leader of the school.


    Section 6: Nominating process Persons interested in running for office must file a petition signed by a minimum of 20 students.

Article V: Standards and Eligibility Committee

    Section 1: The Standards and Eligibility Appeals Committee shall consist of one administrator, one faculty member appointed by the administration, the Student body Second Vice President, and two additional representatives appointed by the administration.

    Section 2: Responsibilities:
    1. In conjunction with the activity advisor, after each term, insure that all participants have met eligibility requirements.
      • Appeal committee shall hear appeals from the following organizations/activities: athletics, cheerleading, classofficers, student body officers, drill team, dance club, and Silverline.

Article VI: Clubs and Organizations

    Section 1:
    1. Students wishing to establish a new club or organization shall submit to the first vice president, in writing, the following information: title, purpose, advisor, membership requirements, and by-laws.
      • The first vice president, together with the administration, shall accept or reject the club's petition for approval.
      • If accepted, an official Club Charter shall be issued to the advisor.


    Section 2: All organizations shall follow school financial procedures.

    Section 3: All club charters will be reviewed annually by the first vice president.

    Section 4: The Cheerleaders, Drill Team, and Silverline shall be official organization of Hunter High and shall meet the requirements of all school organizations/clubs.

Article VII: Publications

    Section 1: Hunter High School shall publish an official:
    1. Student directory, The Wolveringer
    2. Parent newsletter, The Paw Print
    3. Newspaper, The Blue Print
    4. Literacy magazine, Images
    5. Yearbook, Legacy


    Section 2:
    1. The student directory shall be compiled under the direction of the SO historian and shall contain the school constitution, school song, names and address of students, and other pertinent information.
      • Publications wishing official school approval must submit a written request to the administration.

Article VIII: Letters

    Section 1: Academic
    1. Students may earn an academic letter by enrolling in a minimum of four (4) academic classes per term, for three (3) consecutive terms, and earning a GPA of 3.7
      • A student may earn four (4) academic letters during his/her three years at Hunter High.


    Section 2: Athletic
    1. The athletic department shall determine the qualifications for earning an athletic letter.
      • The athletic department shall determine the style of athletic jacket.


    Section 3: Departmental
    1. Departmental letters shall determine the qualifications for earning a departmental letter.


    Section 4: The administration shall approve all letter requirements.

Article IX: Royalty

    Section 1: A student previously selected King or Queen may not be nominated again during his/her enrollment at Hunter High.

    Section 2: Students who are nominated may not participate in the election process.

Article X: Ratification

    Section 1: The school constitution shall be ratified following SBO, class officers, and administrative approval.

    Section 2: Amendments to the constitution may be proposed by any student, faculty member, or administrator of Hunter High. Acceptance by two-thirds of WAL shall constitute law.
