Philosophy and Mission Statement [Top]

The Hunter High School Counselors Comprehensive Guidance Counseling Program states that ALL students should gain competencies in the areas of personal, social, educational and career development. We provide training for students to effectively function with peers and others in the school, home and community setting.

We offer developmentally appropriate programs. We want to provide skills for preventative interventions while developing and protecting student individuality and safety. We want to recognize and acknowledge differences, while focusing on how to help each student succeed.

We view guidance as a vital and necessary component for student success and value the importance of career planning and decision making for life after high school. Our Student Educational Occupational Plan (SEOP) involves the student, parent and counselor. It is the vehicle that promotes planning from 10th grade and beyond graduation.

Our Comprehensive School Guidance Program is guided by developmentally appropriate competencies. This is accomplished through Guidance Curriculum, Individual Planning, Responsive Services, and System Support.

We assist students in becoming responsible adults who can develop realistic and fulfilling life plans based on an understanding of themselves and their needs, interests and skills. In addition we want to help students become competent in their decision making and career planning through individual SEOP's and guidance curriculum. We also want to help students learn to take responsibility for their own behavior and to work with others.
