December News 2007Here are the letters that were mailed out at the beginning of December:
What CountsNovember 30, 2007
As you have heard, the Granite School District Board of Education is coming to Kearns High School at 5525 South Cougar Lane on Wednesday, December 12, 2007 at 7:00 p.m. for a special meeting to meet you and to listen to what is important to you concerning our school. This is an opportunity for you to let all of the board members know of any concerns you have, to give them your suggestions, and to ask any questions. The board has titled its series of meetings WHAT COUNTS because they
want to learn what really counts as important to you and your family.
They hope to hear about your top priorities concerning In addition to speaking with board members, you may fill out a comment card with your suggestions instead of speaking, if you prefer. This public meeting will let all of us help board of education members understand what the most important issues are for your students and our school. Your recommendations will help determine the future direction of this school and other schools throughout the Granite District. Please understand that this meeting is not the forum to raise issues about specific school or district employees or for employees to air grievances. I hope that you will join us in this board of education forum. I believe that this is a great opportunity to support and improve our schools. Sincerely, Stephen K. Hess UBSCT Testing February 2008Dear Parents In 1999, the Utah Legislature directed the State Board of Education to develop a test of basic skills for high school students. The purpose of the test is to make sure every Utah student meets minimum state standards before graduating from high school. The name of this test is the Utah Basic Skills Competency Test (UBSCT). The test is composed of three sections: Reading, Mathematics & Writing. For each section a proficiency level of minimal, partial, sufficient or substantial can be obtained. To pass these tests your student must obtain the sufficient or substantial level. Anything below these testing levels will require you to be retested. All Sophomore students as well as any Juniors and Seniors who have not passed, will be tested on the following dates: Writing Tuesday, February 5, 2008 Students must pass each section of the test as well as fulfill all other graduation requirements in order to receive a high school diploma. Once a section is passed it does not need to be retaken. This will be the last opportunity for Seniors who have not passed any section of the test. We appreciate your support in the UBSCT testing. Sincerely Kearns High School Administration
