Course Descriptions

  • 21000 BANKING & PERSONAL FINANCE
    10-12 SEMESTER
    This one-semester course provides students with an overview of the financial services performed by financial institutions. Students will gain knowledge of how institutions function, the many types of investments available, and career opportunities in the banking and finance industry. Students will also learn about personal financial concepts dealing with budgeting, saving and investing, preparing income taxes, buying insurance, and using credit wisely.

    10-12 SEMESTER
    LAB FEE: $13.00 Working Papers
    This is an introductory course which teaches the double entry method of accounting. Students will develop an understanding of the principles and procedures in handling cash, recording in journals and posting entries. Students are introduced to the use of computers for accounting procedures.
  • 22520 ACCOUNTING 2
    10-12 SEMESTER
    Students will develop advanced skills that build upon those acquired in Accounting 1. Additional accounting skills such as reconciling uncollectible accounts, calculating depreciation on assets, interpreting financial information, tax forms, and calculating notes and interest will be developed. Computerized accounting will again be incorporated as an essential tool.

    11-12 YEAR
    PREREQUISITE: ACCOUNTING 1 and 2
    LAB FEE: $20.00 Working Papers
    Students will develop an in-depth knowledge of accounting procedures and techniques learned in Accounting 1 and 2. The skills learned previously are expanded to include computerized accounting principles applied to partnerships, corporations, written, and spoken communication skills. Students will increase their knowledge of how computers and accounting software help manage, store, calculate, post, retrieve, and print accounting information.

    11-12 YEAR
    PREREQUISITE: 1 SEMESTER OF WORD PROCESSING WITH A MINIMUM OF 30 WORDS PER MINUTE TYPING SPEED.

    This full-year course provides students with an understanding of communication skills; management of time, finances, resources, and records; current and upcoming technology and its impact on the business office; human relations and how to be professional in today's office; and job seeking skills. Units include business dress; filing and records control; telephone usage; office arrangements, equipment and supplies; Internet usage and e-mail; transcription machines; computer merges and sorting; planning meetings and agendas; professional services through the Utah Dept. of Workforce Services; and office banking procedures.
  • 23200 WORD PROCESSING 1
    10-12 SEMESTER
    LAB FEE: $5.00
    This course is for the student who has never had a formal keyboarding class or for the student who wants to improve speed and accuracy skills. The basic word processing skills taught are editing and proofreading documents, creating memos, reports, letters and tables.

    PREREQUISITE: WORD PROCESSING 1
    LAB FEE: $10.00
    This advanced course builds upon the knowledge acquired in Word Processing 1. Students develop advanced application competencies of word processing in formatting and editing business documents. Advanced skills in graphics, tables, sorting, etc. are introduced.
  • 23400 DESKTOP PUBLISHING/ADVANCED WORD PROCESSING
    11-12 SEMESTER
    PREREQUISITE: 1 SEMESTER OF WORD PROCESSING
    LAB FEE: $10.00
    This course introduces students to a process of creating on a personal computer a document that looks like a professionally designed and printed document. Presentation software, a scanner, a color printer and a laser printer assist the students in sizing and inserting photos, graphics, and line drawings into the text copy. Instruction will be provided to produce an original layout for a newsletter, brochure, and other materials that utilize different types of print.
  • 24100 BUSINESS LAW
    10-12 SEMESTER
    The student will gain a working knowledge of law in everyday matters involving contracts, sales, negotiable instruments, insurance, bailments, and property. Students will find this background valuable whether or not they pursue a career in business law.
  • 24200 INFORMATION PROCESSING 1
    10-12 SEMESTER
    PREREQUISITE: WORD PROCESSING 1
    LAB FEE: $5.00
    In this beginning computer course students learn to use Microsoft Office 2000 software to do word processing, a spreadsheet, a database, and telecommunications. An awareness of career opportunities, business ethics, and trends is included.
  • 24300 INFORMATION PROCESSING 2
    10-12 SEMESTER
    PREREQUISITE: INFORMATION PROCESSING 1
    LAB FEE: $5.00
    This course is a continuation of Information Processing 1 and builds on the word processing, spreadsheet, and database skills already learned. Information processing skills are enhanced by the application of graphics within the three applications. Microsoft Office 2000 software is used.

    FEES: COLLEGE TEXTBOOK $50.00, COLLEGE REGISTRATION FEE $20.00
    LAB FEE $5.00
    PREREQUISITE: WORD PROCESSING 1
    In this college credit course, students will learn to use the computer for many software applications using the Windows format. Microsoft Word, Excel, and Windows will be taught. Students successfully passing this class will receive credit for both the Computer Literacy requirement for graduation from SLCC and the U of U. Students will receive both high school and college credit for this class when they pass the course with a "C" or better. Student and parent will be required to sign an "Acceptable Use Policy."
  • 24600 INTERNET 1 FOR BUSINESS
    10-12 SEMESTER
    PREREQUISITES: WORD PROCESSING
    LAB FEE: $5.00
    This semester course provides students with an introduction to the Internet. Students will demonstrate a basic knowledge of the Internet and its tools through the use of e-mail, search engines and browsers. HTML and Web publishing software will be used to create, format, illustrate, design, and edit Web pages. Emphasis will be placed on the application of the Internet in business.
  • 25100 ADVERTISING
    10-12 SEMESTER
    Advertising is a class for students interested in the use of media to advertise products. This course studies magazine, newspaper, catalog, television, and radio advertising. Emphasis is on organizing campaigns for promotions of products and services.
  • 25300 ENTREPRENEURSHIP
    10-12 SEMESTER
    Students gain an understanding of the marketing and management principles necessary to start and operate their own business. They will develop an awareness of the opportunities for small business ownership and develop the planning skills needed to open a small business. Students will become aware of the traits and characteristics of successful entrepreneurs. Students gain an awareness of knowledge needed in research, planning and regulations affecting the small business and the means of financing a small business. They will understand the specific strategies of business management and marketing and the economic role of the entrepreneur in the market system. Entrepreneurship is designed for students enrolled in marketing and/or other courses who have an interest in developing the skills, attitudes, and knowledge necessary for successful entrepreneurs.
  • 25400 INTRODUCTION TO MARKETING
    10-12 SEMESTER
    This beginning marketing class explores the way businesses market themselves and their products. Working students and students who want more business skills explore the fundamentals of marketing. You will learn the basic principles needed for todays fast-paced marketing world. Learn how businesses promote, use sales techniques, pricing ideas, and conduct marketing research.
  • 25801 RETAIL MARKETING/INTERIOR DESIGN (CC-SLCC MKT 1480)
    11-12 SEMESTER
    LAB FEE: $15.00/WORKBOOK & OTHER MATERIALS
    A retail, wholesale class designed to help students see how products are moved through a business to the final consumer. We will also look at how to set up a business. All business students are welcome in this class, however, it is offered as part of the Interior Design curriculum.
  • 26000 SPORTS MARKETING
    11-12 YEAR
    This course is designed for the student who wants to become a Marketing Sports Director at a college or in a private sports franchise. An introduction on how to sell advertising, properly display signs, coordinate speakers and activities during athletic contests, and the organization and promotion of the overall sporting activities at Kearns High School.
  • 26100 E-COMMERCE MARKETING
    11-12 SEMESTER
    This course is designed to provide the students with the computer skills necessary to improve marketing and management operations. Students will learn how to use the Marketing Principles on the Internet. The latest techniques and innovations related to marketing functions will be taught using the Internet. Students taking this class will have the opportunity to participate in the DECA organization (student marketing leadership association).
  • PRINCIPLES OF LEADERSHIP CC (BMC 1250)
    11-12 YEAR
    TEACHER SIGNATURE REQUIRED
    FEE REQUIRED: $20.00 CONCURRENT FEE
    Overviews principles of leadership. Provides students with information on successful leadership styles. Includes lectures, videos, cases, group activities, and class discussion. College credit will be through Utah Valley State College.
