  • SOPH. ENGLISH 3-4 FUNDAMENTALS
    10 YEAR
    SIGNATURE OF ENGLISH TEACHER REQUIRED
    This sophomore English class is designed for students who have struggled in 9th grade English. Course work involves reading and language skills with specific concentration on vocabulary development, reading comprehension, and thinking skills. Emphasis will also be placed on grammar, usage, punctuation, spelling, and effective self-expression through writing.

 

  • SOPHOMORE ENGLISH 3-4

    SIGNATURE OF ENGLISH TEACHER REQUIRED
    SOME TEACHERS REQUIRE PURCHASE OF A $7.00 VOCABULARY BOOK
    This is the regular sophomore English class which includes the study of basic sentence structure, usage, punctuation, vocabulary development, reading and writing skills.

 

  • SOPHOMORE ENGLISH 3-4 HONORS
    10 YEAR
    PREREQUISITE: APPLICATION AND WRITING SAMPLE
    SIGNATURE OF ENGLISH TEACHER REQUIRED
    $7.00 VOCABULARY BOOK PURCHASE REQUIRED
    This advanced English course will emphasize critical and individual thinking through the study of classical and contemporary literature. It is also designed to develop a high level of competency in composition, grammar, vocabulary and spelling. This course is intended to prepare the highly motivated, mature, capable student for college. Students should expect a heavy workload from this class. Maintenance of a "B" class average is mandatory. You should score in the upper 7, 8, 9 stanines on the Stanford Achievement test.

 

  • JUNIOR ENGLISH 5-6 FUNDAMENTALS
    11 YEAR
    PREREQUISITE: LANGUAGE EXPERIENCE
    SIGNATURE OF ENGLISH TEACHER REQUIRED
    The curriculum will include vocabulary, mechanics, usage, daily journals, novels, and a variety of American literature. Writing for self-expression will be emphasized. This course is designed for students who took Sophomore English 3-4 Fundamentals during their sophomore year.

 

  • JUNIOR ENGLISH CORE 5-6

    SOME TEACHERS REQUIRE PURCHASE OF A $7.00 VOCABULARY BOOK
    Designed for junior students who took English 3-4 as a sophomore. Emphasis will be on critical reading, vocabulary, writing and interpreting. This class presents an overview of the best American fiction and non-fiction.

    Students choosing Junior Honors English should have completed sophomore English 3-4 Honors or Sophomore English 3-4 with current English teacher's recommendation. Attendance and completion of quality, timely assignments are expected. Extended composition and critical study of American literature is the basis for the class.

 

  • SENIOR ENGLISH 7-8 FUNDAMENTALS
    12 YEAR
    SIGNATURE OF ENGLISH TEACHER REQUIRED
    PREREQUISITE: PRACTICAL ENGLISH
    This is a course for senior students who need basic experiences in reading, writing, and listening. Comprehension and vocabulary development will be stressed and students will explore their opinions in discussion and in formal and informal writing assignments. This class does not prepare students for college level work.

 

  • SENIOR ENGLISH CORE 7-8
    12 YEAR
    TEACHER SIGNATURE REQUIRED
    This semester course is meant to follow the concurrent enrollment Humanities course for those students who did not pass the SLCC placement exam and will not be registering for English 101 (CC). Reading for this course will include some of the best works from selected writers around the world and will go beyond the mainstream of American literature. Emphasis will be on critical reading and interpretation. Writing about the reading will be required!

 

  • SENIOR COLLEGE PREP ENGLISH
    12 YEAR
    SIGNATURE OF ENGLISH TEACHER REQUIRED
    Students in this class have completed Junior Honors English or have received a B or higher grade in Junior English Core 5-6 and are college bound. An intensive focus on development of writing techniques will assist students with standardized tests and college admission essays. Students will be introduced to many college coping skills, stressing note taking, study skills, and research. Focusing on British Literature, this course presents an interesting overview of significant fiction, non-fiction, etc., from Anglo-Saxon times to the present. Students will enhance their ability to interpret even the most difficult and mature literature. A heavy work load is to be expected in this class.

 

  • SENIOR CREATIVE WRITING
    12 SEMESTER
    Designed for students with an interest in and talent for writing, this class emphasizes imaginative writing and improving writing skills. Specific writing assignments will be given so that students will experiment with a variety of forms such as short stories, poems, short plays, and reflect preference pieces. Take this class if you love to write.

 

  • HUMANITIES (SENIORS)
    12 SEMESTER
    SIGNATURE OF ENGLISH TEACHER REQUIRED
    Designed for the mature, inquisitive, senior student. This course explores the areas of art music, film, philosophy, religion, and literature in relationship to ourselves. Students will attempt to find answers to universal questions through their study of the arts and gain appreciation for various art forms.

 

  • HUMANITIES CONCURRENT (SENIORS)
    SLCC INTRO TO HUMANITIES 1100
    11-12 SEMESTER
    PREREQUISITE: GPA and CPA of 3.0
    STUDENTS MUST PURCHASE A TEXTBOOK
    An exploratory approach to the humanities through the arts, showing how the arts relate to concurrent societies. The course includes discussion of all art forms (visual art, music, literature, drama, and film) and introduces students to critical evaluation. Mid-term and final exams, as well as attending professional performances are required as part of the course. Emphasis is on discussion and group activities. Students passing this course with a "C" or better will receive 3 hours of SLCC credit for Humanities. Students taking this class must register for SLCC concurrent enrollment.

 

  • GENERAL FICTION (SENIORS)
    11-12 SEMESTER
    This semester class is designed for students who love to read. This course will introduce major writers. Students will study general works of fiction, including the short story, drama, poetry and film. Class participation and discussion will be significant aspects of this course, so regular attendance is mandatory. Students will be responsible for obtaining most of their own reading materials and extensive reading will be required - a minimum of 1000 pages each term. If you love to read and read a lot, then this class is for you.

 

  • PUBLICATIONS 1-2 (ELECTIVE)

    This class produces the Kearnada, the KHS yearbook, and Attica, the KHS Literary Arts Magazine. Students must have a background in writing, computers, business or photography. Students are required to fill out an application (available in room 210), submit a teacher recommendation for the area they want to work in, and participate in an interview. For an exciting chance to be a part of these KHS publications, please apply to be a part of this class. Apply during 4th quarter for the next school year.

  • JOURNALISM 1 (ELECTIVE)
    10-12 SEMESTER
    This class is an introduction to writing for the high school newspaper. In this course, students will study the four types of journalistic writing: news, features, sports, and editorials. Extensive textbook and outside assignments will focus on writing for each type. Students will practice fundamental skills necessary to proofread and edit copy, and will learn basic layout procedures using Quark XPress. THIS CLASS IS FOR ELECTIVE CREDIT ONLY AND DOES NOT FILL AN ENGLISH REQUIREMENT.

 

  • JOURNALISM 2-6 (ELECTIVE)
    COUGAR CLAW NEWSPAPER STAFF
    11-12 YEAR
    SIGNATURE OF HIGH SCHOOL JOURNALISM ADVISER REQUIRED
    This workshop class produces the school newspaper The Cougar Claw. Good grades, good writing skills and dependability are necessary. Attendance is mandatory for this class. Computer skills and photography experience are helpful. Students working on The Cougar Claw should have taken Journalism 1 at the high school level before registering for this class.

 

  • SENIOR A.P. ENGLISH LITERATURE
    12 YEAR
    SIGNATURE OF JUNIOR HONORS TEACHER REQUIRED
    Advanced Placement is the culmination of the honors program. Students who have successfully completed the honors series in English, and who have maintained high grades are eligible for enrollment. Special emphasis will be placed on furthering development of intuitive writing skills and analysis of mature and difficult literature. Colleges and universities grant up to eight semester hours of English credit to those students who complete the course and pass the Advanced Placement exam with a satisfactory score. Students will also have the option of taking the Language Advanced Placement English exam. Students buy two of their own books. (Approximate cost $40.00)

 

  • SENIOR A.P. ENGLISH LANGUAGE
    12 YEAR
    Technical writing compliments Advanced Placement English through extensive practice in the writing process necessary for the AP English test in May. Class time will also be devoted to helping students with the homework they receive in AP English, and students will get some practice on the Advanced Placement English Language test. Students enrolled in AP English are strongly encouraged to enroll in this course. Students not in the Advance Placement English class are not eligible for this course.

    REGISTRATION FEE $20.00
    PREREQUISITE: GPA AND CPA OF 3.0 AND SLCC PLACEMENT EXAM OR ACT READING SCORE OF 19
    STUDENTS WILL BE REQUIRED TO PURCHASE TEXTBOOKS FOR THIS CLASS
    Students will develop critical reading and thinking strategies for effective writing, collaborative learning, and methods of documentation. This course is meant to increase students' awareness of the different purposes for writing and to increase their confidence in writing. This class is for SLCC concurrent enrollment students only. Students passing this course with a "C" or better will receive 3 semester hours of SLCC credit for Freshman Composition.
