80600 SPORTS SEWING
10-12 SEMESTER
All students will provide material for all their individual projects.
Men and women come take a class that will help your pocket and your
image. Learn to make those sportswear items you pay mega-bucks for.
Projects include sports bags, sweats, boxers, exercise wear, hats, gaiters,
or anything in sportswear you want. Use those skills you men learned
in TLC and impress the women.
80800 CLOTHING 1
10-12 SEMESTER
STUDENTS WILL PROVIDE MATERIALS FOR THEIR INDIVIDUAL PROJECTS.
Learn the basics of clothing construction and fashion. You will gain
the skills to create fun and exciting projects. The proper care and
selection of clothing will be included. This is a great place for the
beginner or someone with a few skills. You will gain new skills as you
select and construct your own projects.
80812 CLOTHING 2
10-12 SEMESTER
STUDENTS WILL PROVIDE MATERIAL FOR THEIR INDIVIDUAL PROJECTS.
Learn by constructing fun and interesting clothing projects in this
class. You can continue to develop and improve your current clothing
construction skills. This is an excellent opportunity to develop skills
in wardrobe selection. If you have sewing skills or have taken Clothing
1, this class will build upon your current skills. You may register
for Clothing 1 and 2 the same year if you have not had previous experience.
81000 FASHION DESIGN
11-12 SEMESTER
STUDENTS WILL BE REQUIRED TO PROVIDE MATERIAL FOR ALL PROJECTS.
Make those creative designs reality. Learn to draft and make your ideas
into patterns and clothing. You will be taught to use the computer,
flat patterns and draping to make items to wear you've only dreamed
of. Construction techniques will be taught as you go. Gain skills to
create your unique creations. Learn techniques for individual fashion
and wardrobe coordination.

10-12 SEMESTER
LAB FEE: $10.00
This class is a great way to learn basic cooking skills and good nutrition.
Students will have the opportunity to apply classroom knowledge by participating
in food preparation in the food lab. You will gain understanding and
knowledge to help you meet individual and family food needs.

PREREQUISITE: FOODS 1 FROM KEARNS HIGH (MAY ENROLL IN FOODS 1 1ST SEMESTER
AND FOODS 2 2ND SEMESTER DURING THE SAME YEAR.)
This class is designed to increase your culinary skills. You will discover
the relationship of nutrition to good health and well-being. Your understanding
of food preparation, meal management and consumer economics will be
enhanced.
81400 CHILD DEVELOPMENT
10-12 SEMESTER
LAB FEE: $5.00
Child Development is an instructional course that will prepare students
to understand children's physical, cognitive, emotional, and social
growth and development, as aspects of the social and biological sciences.
Observation and actual experiences with children are integral components
of this program. Students will receive practical, usable skills to assist
them in becoming better educated and better prepared care givers, siblings,
parents, and citizens.
81501 ADULT ROLES 1 (RELATIONSHIPS)
10-12 1ST SEMESTER ONLY
Adult Roles 1 focuses on understanding and improving the important relationships
in your life. Decisions and choices which will affect your entire life
are considered. This class includes student activities, class discussion
and great films about teenagers. Outside speakers and panels will present
various points of view on controversial and relevant issues. Topics
including service, communication, dating, sexual responsibility, teen
pregnancy, love, date rape, and abusive relationships will be discussed.
The class will be planning and participating in a service project of
their own choice. Students are encouraged to sign up for both semesters
of Adult Roles during the same school year.
81502 ADULT ROLES 2 (RESPONSIBILITIES)
10-12 2ND SEMESTER ONLY
For students concerned about their future responsibilities of marriage,
parenting, and money management. Topics include your first apartment,
mate selection, building a happy marriage, human reproduction, pregnancy,
and child guidance. The study of money management will include savings,
budgeting, checking and credit, and will help you to use your money
to reach your long-term goals. Students will enjoy participating in
"Reality Check", a real life experience in money management
and life experiences. Adult Roles 1 is not a prerequisite for Adult
Roles 2. Students are encouraged to sign up for both semesters of adult
roles during the same year.
81800 BEGINNING INTERIOR DESIGN
10-12 SEMESTER
LAB FEES: $20.00 - $3.00/Tempera paints
This class opens the windows of design, teaching you color coordination,
design principles, architecture styles, how to read and draw floor plans,
and housing consumer skills. Learn to design interiors with your personality
in mind. This class is good for people with a career interest or someone
with a creative flair.
82100 CLOTHING 3-4 (DESIGNER SEWING)
11-12 YEAR
ALL STUDENTS WILL BE REQUIRED TO PROVIDE MATERIAL FOR ALL PROJECTS.
An advanced class for students who desire to increase their skills in
clothing. Projects we will work on during the year will be serger quilts,
something lined, Vogue patterns, something plaid, and computer-drafted
patterns. Students should have taken Clothing 2.
82300 CHILD CARE
11-12 YEAR
LAB FEE: $10.00
Childcare is an instructional course that will prepare students with
the practical and usable skills as well as actual hands on experience
with preschool age children to assist them in becoming better educated
and better prepared care givers, siblings, parents, and citizens. This
class specifically focuses on teaching young children and is a required
class if you are working towards your CDA (child Development Associate
Certificate) in High School. You will put together a teaching portfolio
which includes early childhood subjects in reading, math, science, art,
dramatic play, games, and social studies. You will also receive first
aid and CPR training and get your food handlers permit for working with
children. This training will be an extra charge. It is not mandatory
but is available when you take the class. The fees are: $15.00 for First
Aid training, $15.00 for CPR training, and $5.00 for the food handlers
permit. (These will be needed for your CDA). Field trips to childcare
facilities will also help you to see the childcare jobs and programs
that are in our community.
82301 OCC. CHILD CARE 1ST SEMESTER
82302 2ND SEMESTER
LAB FEE: $10.00
PREREQUISITE: CHILD CARE OR CURRENTLY ENROLLED IN CHILDCARE
Occupational Childcare is an advanced class, which prepares individuals
for occupations related to the care, guidance, and instruction of children.
The student will get everyday hands-on experience teaching and working
with preschool age children in the KHS childcare lab. The childcare
lab is an actual work sight which you not only receive experience, but
you can receive work hours towards your CDA. 480 work hours are needed
to obtain your CDA. If you are working toward your CDA you need to enroll
in classes your junior and senior year. Each semester class is worth
60-70 work hours.
ELEMENTARY INTERN
12 SEMESTER
Elementary Intern is an advanced class which prepares individuals for
an occupation working with elementary age children. You are required
to provide your own transportation. You can choose a teacher to work
with or one will be assigned for you.
CDA CHILD DEV. ASSOCIATE DEGREE
11-12 YEAR
LAB FEE: $50.00 / APPLICATION & TEXTBOOK

PREREQUISITE: CHILDCARE OR CURRENTLY ENROLLED IN CHILDCARE
This class is a National Credentialing program that provides uniform
procedures for assessing the competence of early childhood givers. The
program was established to improve the practice of individuals who care
for and educate young children. The advantages of getting your CDA are
that you can pursue a career working with children and get paid on a
higher level because you have this certificate. This certificate is
now being required to work in daycare centers, as a nanny, Headstart
and Title One preschool programs in the school districts, working in
any program that involves children in the medical field and the state
child programs, etc. This program is taught at a college level and would
take at least a year and a half to complete. You would also pay tuition
for that year and a half. See teacher for requirements to receive your
CDA.
82400 ADVANCED INTERIOR DESIGN (CC)
11-12 YEAR
PREREQUISITE: BEGINNING INTERIOR DESIGN

FIELD TRIPS WILL REQUIRE TRAVEL IN STUDENT DRIVEN CARS.
Now you can learn the world of an Interior Designer with a real hands-on
experience. Use the skills you learned in Beginning Interior Design
to create projects a real designer would do. The class will work with
the district construction class to design an actual home. You will pick
all backgrounds and furniture for a home show in the spring. This class
is helpful to a career-bound student in the design field, an architect,
or any creative person. (Concurrent enrollment credit is available through
Weber State for ID 1053 or ID 1213).
82610 PRO-START I
11-12 YEAR
LAB FEE: $15.00

FIELD TRIPS WILL REQUIRE TRAVEL IN STUDENT DRIVEN CARS. AT LEAST ONE
FOODS CLASS SHOULD PROCEED THIS ADVANCED COURSE.
Pro-Start is the pioneering school-to-work program that introduces high
school juniors and seniors to careers in food service and teaches them
the basic skills and knowledge they need to succeed in the industry.
The class will focus on restaurant management providing opportunities
to work in the industry with a mentor. Students will have the opportunity
to obtain a food handler's permit, to use and maintain commercial food
service equipment and perform quantity food preparation for catering
and sales. Employment and business skills will be emphasized as well
as the secrets of landing a job. Work credit (COOP) is available for
students employed in the food service industry.
82620 PRO-START II
11-12 YEAR (2 PERIODS)
FIELD TRIPS WILL REQUIRE TRAVEL IN STUDENT DRIVEN CARS.
PREREQUISITE: PRO-START I
TEACHER SIGNATURE REQUIRED
Pro-Start II is a continuation of Pro-Start I with the same class format
and goals. At the successful completion of Pro-Start I & II, the
student will be certified by the National Restaurant Association and
qualified to manage a food service business. Concurrent enrollment with
SLCC in Culinary Arts is also available with this course.
82700 PRESENTATION METHODS (CC)
12 1ST SEMESTER
This course is for Institute of Design students, architectural students,
or anyone interested in learning correct presentation methods for design
projects, scaled models, style board, sample boards, presentation boards,
simple quick presentations and media presentations. (Concurrent enrollment
credit is available through Weber State of ID 1203).

PREREQUISITE: BEGINNING INTERIOR DESIGN AND APPLICATION
Interior design is one of the most exciting and creative professions
today. It is a combination of art, science, business, and technology.
Interior designers manipulate space, form, texture, color and light
to enhance the quality of human life. This profession is one of the
largest career areas a student can select. The Institute of Interior
Design is a series of courses that meet graduation requirements and
teach design and housing career skills while students receive 34 college
credit hours. Students will experience a summer internship with a professional
which can provide strengths that will advance them far ahead of other
high school graduates in further design training or in the job market.
The Institute program involves 2 semesters in the student's junior year
and 2 semesters in the senior year that are held at Kearns High School
during the first two A.M. blocks. It is possible to take all 4 semester
classes in the senior year. Time is allowed for students to travel.
Participants should also be taking Advanced Interior Design at their
home school. Students are selected for the program based on successful
completion of Beginning Interior Design, a completed application, and
a short interview with the Institute staff.
