Choir
- SOPRANO-ALTO CHORUS (THE MUSES)
10-12 YEAR
PREREQUISITE: AUDITION MANDATORY
FEE REQUIRED: $10.00
Opportunity is provided in this class for the development of
singing skills through the study and performance of music for
soprano-alto voices. Emphasis is placed on attaining greater
vocal maturity through the application of correct principles
of voice production, breath control, and diction. Special attention
is given to music reading. This group performs on a regular
basis.
- MIXED CHORUS
10-12 YEAR
FEE REQUIRED: $5.00
Opportunity is provided in this class for the development of
singing skills through the study and performance of music for
mixed voices. Beginning voices are given special attention.
Emphasis is placed on the achievement of greater vocal maturity
through the application of correct principles of voice production,
breath control, and diction. Special attention is given to music
reading.
- CONCERT CHOIR
11-12 YEAR
FEE REQUIRED: $15.00 PLUS COST OF UNIFORM
AUDITION AND TEACHER SIGNATURE REQUIRED
This performing group is open to seniors and selected juniors.
Preliminary audition required for entrance. Members are required
to meet higher vocal and musical standards than those of other
groups and must be aware of the commitment to attend all rehearsals
and programs scheduled for the group.
- MADRIGALS
11-12 YEAR
FEE: $80.00 PLUS COST OF UNIFORM
PREREQUISITE: MUST HAVE COMPLETED AT LEAST ONE TERM IN ANY CHOIR
CLASS. SUCCESSFUL AUDITION AND CONSENT OF INSTRUCTION
The primary performing group at the high school has limited
registration for advanced vocal students. Audition required
for entrance. This is a small group of selected students who
are anxious to learn madrigals and songs of a more contemporary
nature, the performance of which involves precision and alertness.
- AP THEORY/HARMONY
10-12 YEAR
TEACHER SIGNATURE REQUIRED
This class is open to students who are interested in learning
about music theory, harmony and the mechanics of how music is
composed. Students wishing to take the A.P. Theory test will
get extra preparation for the test. Students involved in any
music-performing group should take this class to enhance musical
ability.
- 19700 POLYNESIAN CHOIR
10-12 YEAR
AUDITION AND TEACHER SIGNATURE REQUIRED
FEE REQUIRED: $5.00
Students from Polynesian background will have an opportunity
to demonstrate music from their cultures. As the music is taught,
the elements of melody, harmony, intonation, rhythm, and voice
production will be enhanced. The purpose is to join students
in choir to show appreciation for their cultural background
and prepare for performances in an educational atmosphere.
Colorguard
- COLORGUARD
10-12 YEAR
AUDITION & INSTRUCTOR APPROVAL REQUIRED
FEE REQUIRED: $50 PLUS COST OF UNIFORMS
This award winning KHS Colorguard rehearses 9th period during
the fall semester. They perform with the marching band at all
home football games, at parades, competitions, and other events.
During the spring semester, the Colorguard rehearses Tuesdays
and Thursdays from 6:00-9:00 p.m. for participation in the Winter
Guard Circuit. A camp will be held during the summer to prepare
for the fall season.
Dance
- BEGINNING SOCIAL DANCE
10-12 YEAR
COSTUME FEES: $10.00
MUST SIGN UP WITH A PARTNER!
MS. VAN HEERINGEN'S SIGNATURE REQUIRED
Men should have black dress pants, shoes, and socks. Women should
have tan tights and tan jazz shoes. Social Dance is designed
to increase knowledge and ability in partner dancing. The Cha
Cha, Fox-trot, Waltz, Triple Swing, and other dances will be
learned. This class is geared toward the beginning social dancer.
No previous dance experience required. There will be at least
two performing opportunities throughout the year
- DANCE 1-2
10-12 YEAR
COSTUME FEE: $10.00 PER SEMESTER
No previous dance experience necessary. Basic dance fundamentals
taught, including locomotor movements, composition, and technique.
Beginning jazz, modern, and ballet will be emphasized. There
will be two performance opportunities during the year.
- DANCE 3-4
10-12 YEAR
PREREQUISITE: DANCE 1-2 OR FORMAL DANCE TRAINING
TEACHER SIGNATURE REQUIRED
COSTUME FEE: $10.00 PER SEMESTER
Emphasis in this class will be on dance technique, dance expression,
individual choreography, improvisation, and performance.
- DANCE 5-6
11-12 YEAR
PREREQUISITE: DANCE 3-4

COSTUME FEE: $10.00 PER SEMESTER
Dance 5-6 will emphasize advanced dance techniques such as choreography,
performing, staging, costuming, and creative experience.
- DANCE TECHNIQUE
10-12 YEAR
DRILL TEAM & DANCE COMPANY ONLY
This curriculum is specifically designed for members of Drill
team and Dance Company only. Emphasis is placed on classical
ballet training, jazz and modern techniques. Focus will also
be on core strength, flexibility and endurance. Personal eating
habits and nutritional guidelines will be addressed as they
pertain to high dance performance levels.
- DANCE 7-8
11-12 YEAR
PREREQUISITE: AUDITION ONLY
Dance Company performs for various school functions, district
shows, and produces two main Company concerts yearly. The Company
will focus on technique, performance, stage production, choreography,
and teaching skills. This course will expose students to many
aspects of the performing arts and provide opportunity to further
training at a college level.
- DRILL TEAM (CHATTES)
10-12 YEAR
AUDITION REQUIRED
Drill Team (Chattes) is a competing and a performing team. Members
must maintain a GPA of 3.0 and a CPA of 3.0. Expenses are $500+
and are required for each team member. Only females are allowed
on the team. Drill team requires discipline, hard work, and
dedication.
Debate
- DEBATE 1-2
10-12 YEAR
FEE: $40.00
This course offers training in public speaking. It also offers
the opportunity to compete in various speaking events throughout
the state. Skills that you will learn include speaking, argumentation,
research, writing, and communication. There is a $40.00 participation
fee and a $10.00 fee for membership (optional) to the National
Forensic League. Kearns High has a highly successful program
and wants highly motivated, self-directed students who strive
for success. If you fall into these categories then Debate 1-2
is for you.
- ADVANCED COMPETITIVE SPEAKING
11-12 YEAR
FEE: $40.00
TEACHER SIGNATURE REQUIRED
ELIGIBILITY REQUIRED
This course is for returning members of the debate team only.
It is designed for those who want to continue competing in individual
events. You must have a 2.5 GPA and no F's to be eligible. Kearns
High School has a state championship caliber team and wants
highly motivated and self-directed students only. We strive
for and achieve success.
- DEBATE 3-4 ADVANCED DEBATE

Drama
- THEATER 1
10-12 YEAR
This is a basic acting course for those who are looking for
an opportunity to try acting for the first time or to build
on their junior high or community theater experience. In addition,
it will introduce technical theater and scenic design, stage
make-up, and theater history. Students will have the opportunity
to perform in region and state competitions.
- THEATER 2
11-12 YEAR
TEACHER SIGNATURE REQUIRED
This course builds on the acting skills covered in THEATER 1.
Elements of directing and play production will be discussed
and students will perform and direct one-act plays.
- THEATER 3
11-12 YEAR
TEACHER SIGNATURE REQUIRED
Auditioning skills will be practiced and various acting techniques
investigated as students prepare material for scholarship and
play auditions. Students will also prepare for region and state
competitions as well as a class play.
Music
- CONCERT BAND
10-12 YEAR
FEE REQUIRED: $20.00
This ensemble is open to students who are new on their instrument
or otherwise unable to meet the demands of Marching Wind Ensemble.
This group will spend much of its time developing proper technique
and preparing its members to advance to the Marching Wind Ensemble.
- JAZZ BAND
10-12 YEAR
FEE REQUIRED: $20.00 PLUS UNIFORM
PREREQUISITE: Audition, instructors approval, and concurrent
registration in Marching Wind Ensemble, String Orchestra, or
Percussion.
This class provides opportunities to develop skills in the jazz
idiom, advancement of musical potential, higher level thinking,
aesthetic judgment, and jazz appreciation. Members of this elite
group will develop improvisation skill as well as music notation
and theory skills. This group will perform at festivals, competitions,
and other events, including the home basketball games, during
the second semester.
- JAM BAND
10-12 SEMESTER
FEE REQUIRED: $10.00 Plus equipment use fee
PREREQUISITE: INSTRUCTOR'S APPROVAL AND CONCURRENT REGISTRATION
IN ONE OTHER MUSIC ENSEMBLE.
This class provides a forum for students to hear other bands
with 4-6 members cover songs. We will also explore composition
techniques and transcription.
- MARCHING WIND ENSEMBLE
10-12 YEAR
FEE REQUIRED: $20.00 PLUS UNIFORM
This is our top ensemble, open to all Brass and Woodwind players.
September through October will be spent in marching band activities
and performing for home football games. November through May
will be spent preparing for our spring region festival. This
class provides opportunities for advancement and refinement
of musical potential, higher thinking skills, aesthetic judgment,
and nurtures music appreciation. Members will prepare a wide
variety of concert literature, during the year. The Orchestra
will perform at festivals, competitions, and other events. Their
experiences will include full orchestra and combined choral
performances.
- STRING ORCHESTRA
10-12 YEAR
FEE REQUIRED: $20.00 Plus Uniform
String Orchestra is open to all violin, viola, cello, and string
bass players. This group continues to develop a reputation for
outstanding performances. This class provides opportunities
for advancement and refinement of musical potential, higher
thinking skills, aesthetic judgement, and nurtures music appreciation.
Members will perform a wide variety of concert literature during
the year. The Orchestra will perform at festivals, competitions,
and other events. Their experiences will include full orchestra
and combined choral performances.
- PERCUSSION
10-12 YEAR
FEE REQUIRED $10.00 PER SEMESTER Plus $20 equipment fee and
Uniform (annual)
Percussion is open to all new and experienced percussionists.
This class will prepare the percussive element for all other
Kearns instrumental ensembles. In the fall they will function
primarily as the Drum Line for the Marching Wind Ensemble. After
marching season they will spend most of their time working on
percussion ensemble pieces and preparing the percussion parts
for the Marching Wind Ensemble and String Orchestra. Students
will learn a broad range of percussive instruments and strengthen
music reading and notation skills.
Stage Production
- STAGE PRODUCTION
10-12 YEAR
TEACHER SIGNATURE REQUIRED
FEE REQUIRED: $20.00
This class provides students with a variety of experiences in
all aspects of stage productions and auditorium operations.
These experiences include set design and construction, audio
services, light system operations, and general auditorium operations.
Students are required to attend all after-school rehearsals
and performances. Enrollment is limited and instructor permission
is required.
T.V. Productions
- TV/MEDIA PRODUCTIONS
11-12 YEAR

This course surveys all aspects of television production, including
camera, videotape, editing, advertising, and news.
- TV PRODUCTIONS/NEWS
11-12 YEAR
PREREQUISITE: TV/MEDIA PRODUCTIONS
TEACHER SIGNATURE REQUIRED
FEE REQUIRED: $20.00
Class will study television news reporting techniques and will
write and produce the daily "Z News" program. Taught
third and fourth periods.
