Course Descriptions:
NOTE: STUDENTS WHO ARE NOT IN THE HONORS TRACK, BUT STILL WANT
TO TAKE A.P. CALCULUS AS SENIORS MUST TAKE A MINIMUM OF GEOMETRY, BEGINNING
AND INTERMEDIATE ALGEBRA, ADVANCED ALGEBRA AND TRIGONOMETRY AS PREREQUISITE
CLASSES. GRADES OF C+ OR BETTER ARE NECESSARY.
- 52100 ELEMENTARY ALGEBRA
10-12 YEAR
SCIENTIFIC CALCULATOR REQUIRED
Students must know entire times tables, be able to add, subtract,
multiply, and divide fractions. Algebra includes a study of the number
system and linear and quadratic functions. Students planning to attend
college or trade schools should successfully complete Elementary Algebra
with a “C” or better grade before taking the ACT test.
- 52200 SOPHOMORE HONORS MATH (INTERMEDIATE ALGEBRA HONORS)
10 YEAR
TEACHER SIGNATURE REQUIRED
GRAPHING CALCULATOR REQUIRED
EACH QUARTER GRADE FROM ALGEBRA 1-2 AND GEOMETRY 1-2 MUST BE ABOVE
A “C+”
This class covers Intermediate Algebra and
College Algebra. Those students who are successful in this class are
on track for AP Calculus during their senior year. All students who
are successful (A or B grade) in ninth grade geometry should register
for this class.
- 52400 ALGEBRA 2
10-12 YEAR
PREREQUISITE: ELEMENTARY ALGEBRA (PRE-ALGEBRA OR ALGEBRA PREP WILL
NOT DO)
GEOMETRY RECOMMENDED BEFORE TAKING ALGEBRA 2
TEACHER SIGNATURE REQUIRED
SCIENTIFIC CALCULATOR REQUIRED
(GRAPHING CALCULATOR RECOMMENDED)
Each quarter grade from Elementary Algebra must be above a “C”.
Topics from Algebra 1-2 will be reviewed and expanded. New topics
introduced include exponential and logarithmic functions, complex
numbers, and systems of quadratic equations.
- 52500 ALGEBRA 3/TRIGONOMETRY
10-12 YEAR
PREREQUISITE: ALGEBRA 2
TEACHER SIGNATURE REQUIRED
GRAPHING CALCULATOR REQUIRED
Each quarter grade from Algebra 2 and Geometry must be above a “C”.
The first semester will cover advanced algebra topics including solution
of high order equations. The second semester will cover trigonometric
and circular function.
- PRE-CALCULUS CONSISTING OF:
52750 COLLEGE ALGEBRA (CC-SLCC) 1ST SEM
52760 TRIGONOMETRY (CC-SLCC) 2ND SEM
11-12 YEAR
TEACHER SIGNATURE REQUIRED
FEE REQUIRED: $80.00 TEXTBOOK
This class covers functions and their graphs, logarithms, conics,
sequences, and trigonometry. Students will earn high school credit
as well as seven semester hours of math credit at Salt Lake Community
College. Students must have earned a “B” or higher in
previous math classes (at least intermediate algebra). Students will
be required to purchase a textbook. Students will also need to pass
the SLCC placement test or have an ACT test score of 22 or higher
to determine eligibility.
- 53200 GEOMETRY
10-12 YEAR
TEACHER SIGNATURE REQUIRED
SCIENTIFIC CALCULATOR REQUIRED
Each quarter grade from Elementary Algebra must be above a “C”.
Geometry is the study of points, lines, planes, and their applications
to circles, angles, polygons, etc. Students must successfully complete
Elementary Algebra before taking Geometry.
- 54500 A.P. CALCULUS
12 YEAR
TEACHER SIGNATURE REQUIRED
STUDENTS TAKING THIS CLASS MUST ALSO ENROLL IN INDEPENDENT STUDY MATHEMATICS
This is an advanced placement course for mathematics, and includes
materials regularly covered in the first two quarters of college differential
and integral calculus. Upon passing the A.P. examination, students
can receive up to 12 hours of college credit.
- 54600 INDEPENDENT STUDY MATH
12 YEAR
TEACHER SIGNATURE REQUIRED
GRAPHING CALCULATOR REQUIRED
Students taking this class must also enroll in A.P. Calculus. This
class focuses on the problem solving aspect of Calculus. Students
are given assistance with assigned problems and test preparation.
- 54700 A.P. STATISTICS
11-12 YEAR
PREREQUISITE: ALGEBRA 2 & GEOMETRY
TEACHER SIGNATURE REQUIRED
GRAPHING CALCULATOR REQUIRED (TI-83 RECOMMENDED)
Each quarter grade from Algebra 2 and Geometry must be above a “C”.
The topics for AP Statistics are divided into four major themes: exploring
data, planning and modeling data, probability, and statistical inference
in making mathematical conclusions. This course is the equivalent
of a one-semester, introductory college course in statistics. Upon
passing the A.P. examination, students will receive up to 12 hours
of college credit.
