to the environment. This is a lab-oriented class.
57000 WILDLIFE BIOLOGY
11-12 SEMESTER
Study in this class centers on the big game animals and fish of North
America, their natural history, their environment, and their place in
man's changing world. Conservation, wildlife management, and current
issues involving wildlife are discussed.
57050 ORNITHOLOGY
10-12 SEMESTER
PREREQUISITE: BIOLOGY
This course is designed to further the understanding of a student's
relationship with other living organisms. Birds are one of the most
common and important warm-blooded animals the student will come in contact
with during his/her life. It is important that they come to understand
how these animals came into existence and their relationship with these
animals today. Some species of birds are in danger of extinction because
of man's activities and the poisons that have been put into the environment.
Taking the time to study birds will help students develop an appreciation
of these marvelous creatures and see the important role they play in
nature.
57500 MARINE BIOLOGY/OCEANOGRAPHY
11-12 SEMESTER
An introduction to the world's oceans, and to the inhabitants and processes
contained within their boundaries. Students will build upon topics discussed
in zoology with particular emphasis on marine vertebrate such as fish
and mammals. Basic oceanographic principles will be introduced: topics
include ocean topography, sea water, waves and tides. We will also study
the effects of human intervention upon marine and freshwater ecosystems,
including fishing and pollution.
59800 ADVANCED MARINE BIOLOGY
11-12 SEMESTER
PREREQUISITE: MARINE BIO/OCEANOGRAPHY
TEACHER SIGNATURE REQUIRED
This course is designed as a continuation to Marine Biology/Oceanography
or Zoology. The course will center around applications of materials
learned in previous courses with an emphasis on coral propagation and
live marine specimen maintenance. Course work will primarily be centered
around the Kearns Marine Science Center and its inhabitants.
58200 CHEMISTRY 1-2
10-12 YEAR
This course is designed to help students understand basic chemistry
concepts, basic atomic theory, equations and nature of chemical reactions.
Laboratory techniques and experiences are part of the course. Basic
mathematical skills are needed. This class fulfills the graduation requirement
for physical science.
58201 CHEMISTRY 1-2 ESL
10-12 YEAR
TEACHER SIGNATURE OR COUNSELOR REFERRAL REQUIRED
This course is designed to help ESL (English as a Second Language) students
understand basic chemistry concepts, basic atomic theory, equations
and nature of chemical reactions. Laboratory techniques and experiences
are part of the course. Basic mathematical skills are needed. This class
fulfills the graduation requirement for physical science.
58300 HONORS CHEMISTRY
10-12 YEAR
PREREQUISITE: ALGEBRA 1-2
(COMPLETION OF OR CONCURRENT REGISTRATION IN GEOMETRY 1-2 OR ALGEBRA
3-4 IS ALSO STRONGLY RECOMMENDED)
This is a college preparatory course. An essential, basic course for
students who will pursue vocations in the sciences, engineering, medicine,
nursing, and related fields. Principles, concepts, and quantitative
thinking are emphasized. The course covers atomic theory, gases, equilibrium,
chemical reactions, and other principles. This course fills the graduation
requirement for physical science. Students who sign up for this course
should have average standardized test scores (in the fourth to sixth
stanines) or higher.
58400 A.P. CHEMISTRY
11-12 YEAR
PREREQUISITE: HONORS CHEMISTRY AND SECOND YEAR ALGEBRA OR TEACHER PERMISSION
This course is equivalent to the first year chemistry course offered
at a university, with work load and difficulty level matching those
standards. Topics covered include atomic theory, stoichiometry, solutions,
equilibrium, reactions, bonding, acid-base theory, thermodynamics, electrochemistry,
and organic chemistry. With satisfactory completion of this course and
the advanced placement exam students may earn up to 12 hours of college
chemistry credit at most colleges and universities.
58700 PHYSICS 1-2
10-12 YEAR
This is a course for students who need a basic physics background but
who do not intend to pursue a scientific career. Basic mechanics, electricity,
heat, light, and sound are presented as they relate to present technology.
