Course Descriptions:

71010 BASIC WORLD STUDIES
10 YEAR
Course work for this class is the same as for World Studies 1-2. Students registering for this class should have SAT scores in 1, 2, or 3 stanines and a 2.0 CPA. If you sign up for Language Experience for your English class you should sign up for Basic World Studies.

71000 WORLD STUDIES
10 YEAR
Full year class for 10th grade students. This required course covers ancient civilization, the non-western world, the modern world, and current world history. (Requirement may be filled with World Studies Honors.)

72000 WORLD STUDIES HONORS
10 YEAR
This course gives an overview of world culture from 10,000 BC to present. Special attention paid to eastern cultures in addition to the Judaeo-Christian west and the differing ideologies of the world's great religions; additionally designed to prepare students for advanced placement courses and college work.


73000 AMERICAN STUDIES
11 YEAR
Required junior history class covers the American government and economic system and U.S. history since the Civil War. Junior Honors or Advanced Placement U.S. History may be substituted.

73150 AMERICAN HISTORY (ESL)
11 YEAR
This junior year history class is designed for those students who have a Spanish speaking background and will cover essentially the same material as all junior history classes.

73400 HONORS AMERICAN HISTORY (COLLEGE PREP & DISCUSSION ORIENTED COURSE)
11 YEAR
GPA F 3.0 OR HIGHER AND EXCELLENT WORK ETHIC EXPECTED
This is a must course if you love learning about the United States of America and the people who have shaped this nation. Equivalent to a college level survey course, we will study American events and people that have shaped this nation. Honors students explore the issues, events, people and problems that have created the U.S.A. via discussion, reading, writing, and evaluation. Group work, discussion, objective analysis, projects, and personal reflection make this social studies class a must for students who love to learn in a dynamic group environment where history is the platform for the discussion and study of events that have shaped the United States into the great nation it is today.

75100 A.P. AMERICAN HISTORY
11-12 YEAR
FEE REQUIRED: $21.00 FOR WORKBOOK
CURRENT TEACHER RECOMMENDATION REQUIRED.
A course in American history with emphasis on developing college level skills in researching, analyzing, and interpreting source material. It requires the development of college level vocabulary and writing skills. High level academic skills and a desire to compete on a national level for college credit are prerequisites.

75600 LAW AND COURTS (CRIMINAL JUSTICE)
11-12 SEMESTER
This course is an introduction to law and the legal system. This class will cover crime and justice: types or crime, understanding criminal behavior, the police, the courts, corrections, and the justice system, what we face today in our world and what we can expect in the future. This class is for any student interested in law related work i.e. police officers, lawyers, corrections, court workers, etc.


76000 AP EUROPEAN HISTORY
11-12 YEAR
3.5 OR HIGHER GPA RECOMMENDED
A college level course that examines European history from the Middle Ages to the present with emphasis on the evolution of the western world view. Prepares students for the European AP exam in the spring; involves extensive reading, lectures, and class discussion.

76100 COMPARATIVE WORLD CULTURES
11-12 SEMESTER
This course is a survey of the various people and places that comprise our global community. Emphasis will be on third world, non-European regions (Africa, Asia, Oceania, South and Central America). Cultural traditions, history and modern challenges to survival will be our primary focus. This course is an excellent follow-up to World Studies. Lots of food, film and fun!

76400 SOCIOLOGY
11-12 SEMESTER
Sociology is the scientific study of human relationships. Topics range from general theory to specifics such as race, gender, age, religion, class, family, and anti-social behavior. The emphasis is on self-awareness as well as general knowledge. No tests are given but average to above average reading and writing skills and regular attendance are required.

77100 ECONOMICS
11-12 SEMESTER
This is a must class for anyone! If you plan on going to college, the introduction of these concepts is invaluable. If you don't plan on college you will never learn this information anywhere else. We examine over 25 different topics from tax policy, to money, to why prices change and why you will never make it on minimum wage!

77200 PSYCHOLOGY
11-12 SEMESTER
This semester length course will have emphasis on looking at individual human behavior. Topics covered include dreams, hypnosis, memory, I.Q. tests, emotions, handling stress, becoming a productive, happy, and successful person. Also teen issues from handling peer pressure to insights into dating, courtship & marriage will be discussed. There will be interesting discussions, some group work, and excellent up-to-date films. An optional personal improvement project/report will enable students to apply psychology in a more relevant fun and meaningful way.


78300 A.P. PSYCHOLOGY
11-12 YEAR
SIGNATURE OF MR. WHITNEY REQUIRED
This very interesting year-long course is similar to the other psychology course in topics, but is a more in-depth study of them. Everything from dreams to memory to emotions are covered, but in more detail. We will have some group work and additional unique film topics. Most of the emphasis will be in mastering the content of the college level textbook. If you are committed to studying 35 minutes a day outside of class, you will be ready for the A.P. exam in May for potential college credit.

77700 ADVANCED PLACEMENT ECONOMICS (SOCIAL STUDIES ELECTIVE CREDIT)
11-12 YEAR
GPA OF 3.0 OR HIGHER AND EXCELLENT WORK ETHIC EXPECTED.
Economics is a college level course taught with college credit as the potential reward. Discussion, probing questions, insight, analysis, and thought are the great qualities of this outstanding course. Nearly every college student needs to have Economics to graduate. Economics is the study of personal and societal choice. As a social science we study human and personal behavior. Every person benefits by their grasp of economics and using that knowledge to make better choices and decisions. Economics teaches discipline and increases understanding of the USA Free Enterprise system. Economics helps us analyze choices that will help you succeed in life. Economics evaluates choices that can maximize our happiness, our wealth, and our understanding of the role of government in our Free Enterprise society.
