Course Descriptions:

A“B” average in an English class is suggested for all students taking a foreign language.

31100 FRENCH 1
10-12 YEAR
THE PURCHASE OF A WORKBOOK IS RECOMMENDED.
For students with little or no previous French, this fundamental course emphasizes communication. It provides the learning of common words and expressions, basic conversation, and structure. An introduction to geography, history, and culture is included.

31200 FRENCH 2
10-12 YEAR
PREREQUISITE: FRENCH 1 OR TWO YEARS OF JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL FRENCH
PURCHASE OF A WORKBOOK IS RECOMMENDED
This class is a continuation in the fundamentals of French emphasizing communication skills, i.e. speaking, reading, writing, and comprehension. It provides expansion of vocabulary and grammar structure. Further experience in the culture of French speaking people around the world will also be provided.

31300 FRENCH 3
10-12 YEAR
PREREQUISITE: FRENCH 2 OR 3 YEARS OF JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL FRENCH
THE PURCHASE OF A WORKBOOK IS RECOMMENDED.
This course offers intermediate instruction of communication skills with emphasis on more complicated grammar structure, reading, and writing, as well as conversational experiences. Culture continues to be emphasized.

32100 GERMAN 1
10-12 YEAR
First year German emphasizes the four language skills of listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Pupils practice the skills by means of dialogues, drills, reading selections, and written exercises. Students also study the culture of the Germanic countries.

32200 GERMAN 2
10-12 YEAR
PREREQUISITE: GERMAN 1 OR EQUIVALENT FROM JUNIOR HIGH.
TEACHER SIGNATURE REQUIRED
Second year German reviews the important grammar taught in the first course. More complex grammar is also introduced. The four language skills will be improved and culture study continued.

32300 GERMAN 3
11-12 YEAR
PREREQUISITE: GERMAN 2
Although listening, speaking, reading and writing skills will continue to be an important part of the course curriculum, elaborate or difficult grammar structures will also be emphasized. Passages for reading will be more comprehensive, and the history and the culture of the German-speaking world will be emphasized.

33500 JAPANESE 1
10-12 YEAR
Japanese is fast becoming one of the most important languages used in the world today. Japanese 1 will cover basic conversation skills as well as fundamental grammar and vocabulary needed to speak the language. This class includes instruction on writing the Japanese alphabet, including both Hiragana and Katakana (????). Furthermore, we will learn some of the basic Japanese characters, or Kanji. Throughout the year we will also explore the people of Japan and their unique culture.

33600 JAPANESE 2
11-12 YEAR
PREREQUISITE: JAPANESE 1
This class is a continuation in the fundamentals of Japanese 1 emphasizing communication skills, i.e. speaking, reading, writing, and comprehension. It provides expansion of vocabulary and grammar structure. Further experience in the culture of the Japanese speaking people will also be provided.

34100 SPANISH 1
10-12 YEAR
Beginning Spanish stresses the four language skills of listening, reading, writing, and speaking. There will be a heavy emphasis on speaking. Students learn conversation skills needed in daily activities and travel. Elementary grammar is introduced and practiced. Students are introduced to lifestyles, customs, and traditions typical of Spanish-speaking countries.

34200 SPANISH 2
10-12 YEAR
PREREQUISITE: SPANISH 1 OR JUNIOR HIGH EQUIVALENT
TEACHER SIGNATURE REQUIRED
This course continues concepts begun in Spanish 1, but on a more advanced level. Conversation is emphasized and reading and writing practiced. Cultural topics are continued.

34300 SPANISH 3
10-12 YEAR
PREREQUISITE: SPANISH 2 OR JUNIOR HIGH EQUIVALENT.
TEACHER SIGNATURE REQUIRED
This course emphasizes conversation in Spanish and advanced grammar. Discussion will be held on a structured basis allowing practice for expression. A textbook serves as a background for continued growth in the language. Students will be encouraged to explore topics of cultural significance on the Internet and/or chat with someone online in Spanish.

34400 SPANISH 4
11-12 YEAR
PREREQUISITE: SPANISH 3
TEACHER SIGNATURE REQUIRED
Students will continue studying grammar and using what is learned in oral situational practice such as role-plays, conversations, reports, etc. They will begin practicing storytelling and answering short questions that will be recorded on a cassette tape, which they must provide. They will read elementary Spanish and Latin American literature. We will continue to explore cultural topics and learn from the Internet.

34600 A.P. SPANISH
12 YEAR
PREREQUISITE: SPANISH 4
TEACHER SIGNATURE REQUIRED
Students will study the fine points of Spanish grammar in preparation for the A.P. exam in the spring. They will be exposed to Spanish and Latin American literature. Discussion and conversation will be in Spanish in order to refine oral skills. Students will record stories and answer oral questions on an audio tape which the students must provide.

34810 AMERICAN SIGN LANGUAGE 1
10-12 YEAR
LETTER OF RECOMMENDATION AND GPA OF 3.0 OR HIGH REQUIRED.
In this course, students will learn American Sign Language (ASL) which can be used in everyday communication with the deaf. Students will learn a wide range of vocabulary as well as basic grammar, but the focus will be on communicating only through sign in class. Activities will range from conversations to role-playing to story telling. Students will also become aware of the deaf culture so they may better understand and communicate.

34820 AMERICAN SIGN LANGUAGE 2
11-12 YEAR
PREREQUISITE: SUCCESSFUL COMPLETION OF LEVEL 1 WITH A “B” AVERAGE
This course is the second year of American Sign Language and is designed to further develop students’ proficiency in ASL. It continues the development of basic conversational and receptive skills by focusing not only on additional vocabulary, but also on grammar and usage skills. Students will continue to learn about the deaf culture and history. They will grow comfortable communicating in sign and telling stories or presenting mini-lessons to the class. The class atmosphere is definitely hands-on as students consistently learn to sign better by signing about an ever-widening scope of events without using their voices.
