What is “CTE”?
This is Career and Technical Education. Until recently it was known as Applied Technology and before that it was Vocational Education. Unfortunately, the idea of “Vocational Education” is still associated only with training for “blue collar” working-class jobs which were seen as inferior in status to the “white collar” or professional type jobs. There has been a huge change in the career world, now that we are into the information age. People now must realize that we are now in a global economy and the career world has changed:
Notice how 65% of all job opportunities are in the “skilled” occupations. These are jobs that require technical ( CTE) training, not four year or more college degrees. Only 20% of jobs now (the professions) require that type of education. Yet most students and parents still believe that the college degree is the only way to win in today’s world.
CTE education and training begins in jr. high and high school with a large variety of courses that provide skills certification and makes people employable with those skills in the real world.
CTE classes at Olympus High are identified in three main groups:
Business and Marketing
Family and Consumer Science
Trade and Industry
Olympus High also has a couple of classes in 2 additional groups: Computer Science and Health Science.
